Yahoo! News - New York tramples Bill of Rights to protect 'grass'?
by adamist at 10:25 am EDT, Aug 26, 2004

New York's Central Park has long been the logical place for mass gatherings, with its sprawling Great Lawn and, well, central location. In 1991, singer Paul Simon drew 750,000 there. In 1995, Pope John Paul II celebrated a mass that drew more than 130,000. And in 1997, country singer Garth Brooks played to a crowd of 250,000.

But political assemblies on the eve of the Republican National Convention appear to be taboo. This week, city officials persuaded a federal judge to keep the park off limits Saturday to a protest rally by 75,000 people jointly sponsored by an Arab-American coalition and an anti-war group.

In a nationwide poll conducted earlier this year for the Freedom Forum's First Amendment Center and American Journalism Review, only 10% of respondents could name the right of assembly and free association as one of those guaranteed by the First Amendment.

After the oppression of British colonial rule, those were among the rights the Revolution was fought for. They're still worth defending. Protecting municipal grass is a thin excuse for mowing down those rights.

The judge refused to grant them a permit because they waited until the last minute. It has nothing to do with trampling on the bill of rights and everything to do with slackers who show up to protest something because they want to feel hip. If they were so interested in politics, they should have run for office themselves. This was about procrastination. Maybe they will learn from their lesson and get an earlier move on things, next time. I know Kerry's loyal brainwashed fools want to shift this around to seem like one party is trampling on our rights, but where were they when the democrats trampled over the same right to peaceable assembly in Boston last month? they were nowhere. In fact, the "Free Speech Zone" in Boston resembled a palestinian refugee camp. At least the protestors in NYC get to March down the Avenue. They got more than they should. The Central Park Protest would have ruined my ability to enjoy a place that I love, and if the out-of-towner democrats who would be ruining said lawn had any class, they would have helped the NYC democrats run a better campaign back in 2001 and we would not have Bloomberg as the mayor. Incidentally, Bloomberg has serious issues with Bush over Federal Aid, and he did not want to encroach on the hard-working citizens of the big apple by tightening security unreasonably. He fought the white house in this issue and won. Bloomberg usually sucks, but regarding the convention, he has acted with integrity. His primary duty is to take care of New Yorkers interests first (including protecting their beloved park from overburden), the welcome visitors second, and then the rights of a few terrorist sympathizers and democrats last. Sounds like a good mayor to me. Remember the concept of constituents? Those are the people to look out for. In America, Majority rules, but minorities have rights. They can march in NYC, just not in the park. They are lucky they arent dealing with the democrats, who would simply cage them in like animals.

The Mayor's first responsibility is to protect the interest of New Yorkers, and I think he is right on the money (ha ha) about that.

From the NY Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/front/breaking_news/story/225983p-194108c.html):
"Let protesters walk on grass, majority of NY'ers say"
Seventy-one percent of the city’s registered voters think protesters should be allowed to demonstrate in Central Park during the Republican National Convention, and 11 percent plan to go to a demonstration themselves, according to a poll released Thursday.

Most New Yorkers, 81 percent, approve of lawful demonstrations during the convention, and 68 percent approve of nonviolent civil disobedience, the Quinnipiac University Poll found. Nearly all disapprove of violent protests, according to the poll.

“The city is rolling out the red carpet for the Republican delegates, but most New Yorkers would roll out the green carpet of Central Park for the anti-Republican demonstrators,” Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement.

“Lawful demonstrations — even nonviolent civil disobedience — are a time-honored tradition and still widely supported,” he said. “But 19 out of 20 New Yorkers draw the line at violence.”

Several of the responses claim this is a battle between the interests of New Yorkers and outsiders. Whatever good arguments can be made for preserving Central Park, "New Yorkers vs Terrorist Sympathizers" is bull.

I live in New York City. My mother grew up in New York City. My grandfather is 93, and has lived here his entire life. We all support the protest. As everyone knows, NYC is 80% Democratic and there are plenty of New Yorkers who are outraged at Bloomberg's decision on the park protests. Most people estimate that at least half the protestors will be residents of the city, so let's drop the whole "New Yorkers need to be protected from outsiders" line. Many of us don't want Bush in our city.

More specifically, I'm appalled that a protest smaller than the officially approved capacity is being denied. Apparently listening to music is a more important right than political free speech, Constitution be damned. That protest (the relatively small Arab-American Rights one) was not requested at the last minute, and the city government took its own sweet time in denying it.

To bring up the whole "Terrorist Sympathizers" issue gets to why so many of us New Yorkers are angry. While we live in the most vulnerable city in America, Bush has squandered our military and our resources on a war that's made us no safer, and has enraged the moderate Middle Eastern countries. Bush might as well have posed for an Al Qaeda recruitment poster. Bush acts like a Manchurian candidate, strengthening the forces of the terrorists while turning us against ourselves.

New York City lost 3000 people to the terrorists, so you might think people would pay attention to New Yorkers' feeling regarding how Bush is leading this war. Most New Yorkers want Bush out, more than in any other big city in America. The people who've most suffered the burden of the terrorists' attacks want Bush out of power, not able to further wound America.

Where do you live, asshole? I will bet that it is not NYC. I have lived there before, and I know that there are no excuses for outsiders converging upon our city and fucking with our natural landmarks. It's NYers Vs. Terrorist sympathizers. If you don't care to acknowledge this fact, then you are obviously a left-coasty trying to ruin us. Terrorist sympathizers don't need to ruin Central Park's Great Lawn. Yahoo! News - New York tramples Bill of Rights to protect 'grass'?
by Decius at 10:43 am EDT, Aug 26, 2004

[ It's a bs excuse and no one's even bothering to hide it. They don't want protests and they'll use whatever stupid crap they can find that'll achieve the end result. It's either a public place or it's not, and as I said in an earlier related topic, in any case where there's not a clear and obvious danger to public safety, people have the right to assemble, and that' pretty much it, as far as i'm concerned. -k]

I don't suppose you realize that permits for protests WERE approved in places CLOSER to the convention. Far more protests were approved for this convention than were done in boston. So your theory is off.

That is so simplistic that it makes me want to puke. You are an idealist, apparently and you do not like to examine issues. Please inform yourself properly. I am glad that the great lawn will not be trampled upon by hatemongering morons. This is a triumph for NYC. You will recall that some folks in the city lost loved ones in an attack that was NOT Bush's fault, but rather it was the very arabs that are organizing this march. Islam, Allah, Mohammad and the hate that they represent should not be trampling over the last refuge of nature in NYC, but rather wasting away in Guantanamo Bay

Takes one to know one! Hope you get killed in a terrorist attack, fucker! Unless, of course, if you are one of the ones who will be doing the attacking. That is what it seems to me. By the way, I am usually very mellow regarding you, but in fact, I feel that you are a total fool, much like the majority of the users of memestreams. I will sit down and pray tonight that your mom gets clitcancer so that she may be dissuaded from cursing the Earth with any more of her disgusting progeny. Sorry that you are a politically correct fuckhead. It must make your life suck as bad as Tom and Nicks!
