"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

68% of Republicans don't believe in evolution
Topic: Politics and Law 12:45 am EDT, Jun 19, 2007

"68% of self-identified republicans do not believe in the theory of evolution."

3 Republican presidential candidates do not either. Just interesting facts from a recent Gallup poll. I'd not seen this in the news, but I heard it on the Colbert report and thought I'd check it out to see if it really was true.

I'm kinda floored that people reject the theory to the extent they do in the US. It seems it is getting worse.

Should Science Speak to Faith
Topic: Education 9:26 am EDT, Jun 18, 2007

Great article. Of course my first response on reading the title was "If they want funding they better." Of course, the article goes much deeper than that, giving the reader ideas about ways to confront creationism and young earth theory.

I am confronted with that quite often, and yet my position is not one to be able to challenge, but I found this article refreshing and HELPFUL. I've never liked Dawkins much, but the article introduced me to Knauss, who is much 'more gentle' in his approach. He has some lectures and power points at his website here: http://www.phys.cwru.edu/~krauss/

"Although the authors are both on the side of science, they have not always agreed about the best ways to oppose religiously motivated threats to scientific practice or instruction. Krauss, a leading physicist, frequently steps into the public spotlight to argue in favor of retaining evolutionary theory in school science curricula and keeping pseudoscientific variants of creationism out of them. An open letter he sent to Pope Benedict XVI in 2005, urging the pontiff not to build new walls between science and faith, led the Vatican to reaffirm the Catholic Church’s acceptance of natural selection as a valid scientific theory."

The K sensitive password
Topic: Futurism 8:42 am EDT, Jun 18, 2007

"Even the most brilliant technology can fall short in that it may be too expensive or too complex for the average senior to use."

And then there was the 'k sensitive' password.
My dad is 74 and had trouble with his email. He's a healthy man that still works even though he has not had to in years. He's very active.

He said it kept 'shooting up a box that said password' and so I told him to call Comcast if he couldn't remember his password.

So he did, and still it would not work. "I don't know what I'm doing wrong."

So I went down, and asked him what password they gave him, and he had written down.......... 'k sensitive' He said he'd been trying it every which way he could.

Now this is a man who owned extensive real estate, and 2 businesses in his life. How did this happen?

So I called Comcast to get his REAL password. As soon as I pressed the number in the voice automated system for email problems, a pretty female voice said "Your password is case sensitive."

My dad had assumed - because of his lack of technology vocabulary - well, you all understand. However, to me, it really highlighted the problem that seniors have using and understanding technology, and it just isn't fair.

It isn't fair to leave our 'old but capable' so far behind. It is also probably a huge market if someone would care enough to tap it.

The rise of copper
Topic: Markets & Investing 4:33 pm EDT, Jun 16, 2007

Watch copper go. Here's a great site to check the values of base metals. Perhaps think twice about throwing away that copper wiring.... Check the going rate of aluminum before you go to sell your old cans....
www.kitco.com is a great place to check precious metal values too. Gold has been trying to get to 700.00 an ounce but just can't seem to get there....those pins and tracings are often gold. Think twice before throwing out those cards. They will sell as they are in lots if you don't want to mess with chemical extraction of the gold.

He's a great speaker too - I would love to see him like..instead of Hannity and Colmes - Hannity and Rushdie. That would be COOL.

Love the man, glad he got the honor. :)

RE: Feds Corner Hmoe of Ed and Elaine Brown Over Tax Issue
Topic: Society 7:17 pm EDT, Jun 15, 2007

I dunno if you are missing anything or not.
I always pay my taxes, but my complaint is that it should not take a professional with years of education to understand the tax code.

It is written with so many loopholes and tiny details - I understand that Forbes had numberous accountants do his taxes with the same data, and they all came out with very different amounts.

I also heard both Forbes and Bill Gates say in a conference that niether of them even had to PAY taxes, because they could just shuffle their money around.

So that's the only beef I have with it.

I read they were offering a $300,000 reward for someone that could 'show them the law.'

Good grief, someone go show them the law!

The Browns said on a Coast to Coast Interview last night... "Show me a law that we have to pay...and we will pay. No one has shown us a law."

I don't know if that is true or not, but why can't someone very publically show them a law?

"CBS/AP) Federal authorities have cut phone, power and Internet service at the fortified compound of a couple convicted of tax evasion who have refused to report to prison.

It's unclear what effect that has on Ed and Elaine Brown, who have solar and wind power generators at their 110-acre spread, where they have been holed up for months. "

RIP Mr. Wizard
Topic: Science 2:46 pm EDT, Jun 13, 2007

Don Herbert, Mr. Wizard, has passed away at age 90.

2nd most important science guy in my life when I was a kid... the most important thing was the giant woolly mammoth in the lobby of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. If you put the handset to your ear the mammoth would tell you all about itself AND what new things there were to see at the museum.

A really great man.......
He inspired so many.

RIP Mr. Wizard
