From Boing Boing (http://www.boingboing.net/):
Zed sez: "An Indian-born Canadian citizen was flying home from India to Toronto, and transferring at O'Hare. INS decided her passport was funny-looking, destroyed it, denied her access to the Canadian consul, and deported her to India via Kuwait with her papers in such disorder she might not have been able to get into India if Kuwaiti and Indian authorities hadn't been so co-operative."

William Gibson talks about how his new present-day novel, "Pattern Recognition," processes the apocalyptic mind-set of a post-9/11 world. ... There is no connection between Cayce and Case; no meaningfulness. Gibson explains that as part of his novelist craft, he goes through a complicated artistic ritual in order to summon his characters out of the ether. In this ritual, coming up with the right name is the crucial first step. And the process by which he came up with Cayce, he declares, had nothing to do with Case. "Cayce" was its own "found object" -- much as the name Case, from "Neuromancer," was also a found object, inspired originally by Case pocketknives. Nodal point |

] A bacterial infection that overpowers most antibiotics ] has escaped the confines of hospitals and is showing up ] in alarming numbers among the general public in ] California, according to health officials. For a long time now, this has been one of my pet issues. Just in case you have not heard the line yet, unless you need them, I mean really need them, do not take antibiotics. You will be doing your fellow man a great disservice if you over use them. Also, (easy one) do not spend any more time in hospitals then is necessary. Remember, those germ things evolve faster then you do. I didn't like the "Gay Men" slant of this article.. Left a bad taste in my mouth in reguard to how AIDS wasn't taken seriously till it started killing people enmass who were not gay. Superbugs. Get used to that phrase.. You will have trouble finding someone skilled in the medical field who dosen't think we will see more of them.. The super-bugs have arrived! |

] Walters, the U.S. drug czar, says he has talked with his ] Canadian counterparts about the pitfalls of pot ] legalization and harboring of American drug fugitives. ] "If Canada wants to become the locus for that kind of ] activity," he says, "they're likely to pay a heavy ] price." This is a really good article. I would not be suprised if Canada legalized pot. If they did, then this will segway with current conservative anger about the open border (thank you Bill "no spin (yeah, right)" O'Reilly). The result will be a very strange border situation, with major hassles involved in crossing one direction, but little trouble crossing the other direction... If this impacts the rate of trade, or if there are trade restrictions, then both sides will feel this in their wallets and their markets. The US may try to screw with the trade situation betting that it will hurt Canada more then the US. Of course, the US will have to contend with domestic pressures, both from the pot brigade, but also from corporate america and wall street... So basically, this is worth paying attention to because it is certainly possible that there is a situation developing here that could have serious economic and policy implications. If this situation worsens rapidly this could prolong the recession. The Drug War Refugees |
