iPhone 5 Could Debut In June/July

Despite widespread speculation that Apple’s iPhone 5 is facing delay, there is still hope that the most anticipated smart phone could make a June/July debut, according to some industry watchers. Recent rumors suggest we’re more likely to see a fall release than in summer but Steve Jobs and his crew could actually surprise us this month or the next. Here’s why:

1. Evolutionary rather than revolutionary changes seen
Apple, which is much more on software this year, is expected to release a product with an incremental update. iPhone watchers believe the next device will be an upgraded iPhone 4, most notably with a faster processor and some updated specs, instead of a major advancement. If this is the case, a roll-out of the more advanced product shortly after the White iPhone 4 would make a lot more sense than to delay its launch by three months.

2. iPhone 5 to come only in black
Speculations say the late release of the white version of iPhone 4 affected the release of its successor and because the white version is still selling pretty well, Apple might stretch its trend up until the following year. Countering this speculation, some industry watchers suggest Apple will launch the new iPhone only in black for a short period of time. This means the White iPhone 4, having a sense of exclusivity, can continue enjoying sales and would therefore not hinder an iPhone5.

3. Apple to announce iPhone 5 at a separate event
Steve Job’s silence on the iPhone 5 at the WWDC conference this week strengthened speculations that there won’t be any release this summer. However, news have also surfaced that Apple will hold a second event in June, separate from WWDC, to announce iPhone 5. This would then pave the way for a release in the fourth week of June.

Will Jobs surprise us all this June and unveil the next generation iPhone? We have several more days to wait and see.

No 4G iPhone at WWDC? — Go For 3G Smartphone

If you were holding out for Apple to announce a new, next-generation iPhone, perhaps even an iPhone 4G LTE, at WWDC and were disappointed that there was no new hardware announcement, you shouldn’t be disappointed. 3G smartphones, or even evolutionary 3G devices that rely on HSPA+ technologies are still great options. Depending on your needs, these phones may be better suited for you.

1. Roaming: As it stands, 4G in the U.S. is being built on disparate technologies, so roaming both in the U.S. domestically and internationally will be a challenge with 4G smartphones. Sprint uses 4G WiMax, where available, for data and relies on 3G CDMA/EVDO for voice in handling simultaneous voice and data. There isn’t a multi-mode 4G/3G CDMA/HSPA/GSM phone yet that can handle worldwide traveling with Sprint, but if you opt for a 3G smartphone–like the recently available Motorola XPRT Android smartphone–you can get a world phone that will give you 3G data in the states and abroad. The situation is similar with Verizon Wireless, where the carrier uses 4G LTE, and for GSM carriers like T-Mobile, which uses a different 3G/HSPA+ 4G band than other regions of the world.

Additionally, even with AT&T’s iPhone 4, which is a global smartphone, you’ll find the device locked so you’ll have to pay high roaming fees to AT&T when traveling abroad. If you consider an unlocked GSM smartphone, you may come out ahead if you travel overseas a lot as you can pop in a local SIM and get local rates for voice and data, and then plug your AT&T SIM card back in when you arrive home.

2. More options: If you take iOS and iPhones out of the equation, you’ll have more choice of platforms and carriers. Currently, in the U.S., iOS is only available on AT&T and Verizon Wireless. If you prefer cheaper alternatives, you can find other smartphone alternatives on Sprint and T-Mobile USA. If Verizon and AT&T are for you, there are also other platforms worthy of consideration, including Windows Phone 7, webOS, Android, and BlackBerry.

3. Better coverage: 4G rollout, although fast, still doesn’t blanket as much of the country as 3G does. Right now, LTE is still nascent, and though AT&T and T-Mobile are working to overlay its 3G network with evolutionary HSPA+ technology, you’ll need an HSPA+ phone, marketed as 4G, and also to live in a 4G coverage area to enjoy enhanced data speeds. LTE on Verizon Wireless is still the leader when it comes to real world performance and speed, but if you don’t need 10-20 Mbps downloads on your phone, 3G will serve you perfectly well and you... [ Read More (0.3k in body) ]

Just as Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference featuring previews of Apple’s latest devices gets underway this week, so has a new spamming operation using a fictional iPhone 5G to fool victims.

Computer security firm Sophos said a new batch of spam mail claims to come from Apple with the subject line, “Finally. The amazing iPhone 5. Now available in black edition."

“Take care not to click on links contained inside the email, however, as they’re directing to a malicious executable file called iphone5.gif.exe. Of course, the images of the iPhone 5 with a built-in hardware keyboard are just some fanboy’s dream," Sophos senior technology consultant Graham Cluley said in a blog post.

Cluley said the emails claim to be from noreply@apple.com.

He said the body of the emails contains an Apple logo and an image of the supposed iPhone 5 with a built-in physical keyboard.

“Introducing the iPhone that lets you do more than ever. And do it amazingly faster. ... Launch and switch between applications quickly. Bigger display, transparent mode, better cloud integration. Shoot, edit, and share video like never before. Slimmer, faster and sleeker. Discover many more features that make iPhone 5G S the best iPhone yet," the email claims.

Ironically, Cluley said this spammed-out malware attack does not infect iPhone or even Apple Mac users.

“The Trojan only infects the Windows operating system," he added.

Apple’s iCloud Is A Game Changer

While some consumers may have been disappointed at the lack of an iPhone 5 announcement, tech analysts aren’t as quick to dismiss Apple’s main event this week, the iCloud.

At its annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) event, Apple introduced the iCloud. The new service for all Apple devices will allow consumers to automatically and wirelessly store content in the cloud and push it to any device without them having to do anything. “Some people think the cloud is just a big disk in the sky… We think it’s way more than that,” Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said during the event. “iCloud keeps your important information and content up to date across all your devices. All of this happens automatically and wirelessly, and because it’s integrated into our apps you don’t even need to think about it-it all just works.” Music, photos, phone contacts, calendars, mail, apps, books and documents will all beth stored in the cloud. Any updates, saves and changes will be made automatically across all registered devices. Essentially, Apple wants digital life to be updated in the cloud instead of the PC. “We’re going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud. Everything happens automatically and there’s nothing new to learn. It just all works,” Jobs said. Analysts say this service could be huge for Apple and possibly for the entire computing industry. “This is potentially game changing. It’s a whole new way of computing where you’re less dependent on PCs and local storage,” Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said to Reuters. J.P. Morgan Research analyst Mark Moskowitz said in a note he thinks Apple has created a better cloud experience than Google and Amazon’s offering. For one, Moskowitz expects greater support from content providers. Overall, he says the iCloud experience could transform the entire industry, moving away from hard drive storage. “This approach has prepared users for a cloud world, whereby the user does not need to possess/manage all of the data locally. We think that the next off-shoot will be that future PC offerings will rely more on SSDs, not HDDs,” Moskowitz said.

While many are still hoping that Apple will be launching iPhone 5 today at the WWDC conference, a recent press release by the company which listed all the fresh products coming to WWDC next week made it clear that Apple’s customary summer debut is not happening this year. The conference has caused rumors that iPhone5 will be released today because of Steve Jobs' presence at the event. The co-founder and chief executive officer has been medical leave this year but is back to deliver a presentation in the conference. Rumors have suggested that Japan’s recent catastrophe had affected the release of the latest mobile phone as Apple’s manufacturer of lithium ion batteries has shut down. Not only was there a product shortage but also lack of enough supply of materials used in different Apple products such as iPad, iPod Touch and the like. Whatever the reasons behind the shortage or the delay in their product launch are, suggestion overflow from rumors and Apple is the only source that can shed some light on these. However, in relation to today’s conference, it has been talked about that Apple will be exhibiting its latest mobile software, iOs 5 wchich is believed to have Twitter integration that goes beyond basic features like photo sharing and sending tweets. More so, the software is expected to come with some forms of thingamajigs from Android and Windows Phone 7. Thirdly, Apple’s cloud service, iCloud is rumored to cost $25 annually and will be offered through iCloud.com. Soon after Apple is done with the official launch, its newest software for Mac, Mac OS X Lion 10.7, is expected to come out too.

iPhone 5 Will Be Released in September Not At WWDC

Apple fans are keeping fingers crossed as to what CEO Steve Jobs will tell them about iPhone 5 when he makes the (WWDC) on Monday in San Francisco. There is buzz over iPhone 5 features and the form factor as well as about the ability of iOS 5 to trump Android. However, the main point of contention seems to be the release date.
Now, an analyst has said the iPhone 5 will be launched in September, and he does give some good reasons too.
The next generation Apple iPhone will come out in September of this year, and that the recent launch of the White iPhone 4 lends credence to this point, says Brian White, an analyst for Ticonderoga Securities.
According to him the release decision regarding iPhone 5 has become more of a function of marketing and sales than technical. White contends that the launch of White iPhone 4 helped Apple make large amounts during a potential dry period between two major launches. Apple was wise to launch the White iPhone 4 recently after a series of delays as it helped mitigate customer fatigue over waiting for the new iPhone 5.
The next generation iPhone would have made it to the stores in June this year; but the company may have strategically put off iPhone 5 launch to September, when the company starts its forthcoming financial year. White points out that consumers tend to put off iPhone purchase in the quarter preceding the launch of the new device. With the launch of the white iPhone 4 Apple ensured a seamless sales momentum going into the revised launch window for the iPhone 5.
So, will September have a date with iPhone 5? Most market pointer say 'yes' though there is also a strong line of thinking that Apple will indeed unveil at WWDC, its flagship event. Over to WWDC and Steve Jobs.

Apple Chip Roadmap Hints A5 iPhone 5, A6 iPad 3

Looking beyond WWDC to the future evolution of Apple [AAPL] and its iDevices, the A5 chip is faster than anything offered by the competition, according to Microprocessor Review — but future development may put its smartphones and tablets on different paths. Intel wants a piece of Apple’s growing mobile processor pie — will a hybrid ARM/Intel MacBook follow?“The A5 is Apple’s first processor that jumps ahead of the competition, but this differentiation comes at a high cost. Apple’s processor-design choices will affect the way it rolls out new products in 2011 and beyond,” writes, Linley Gwennap, senior editor for Microprocessor Review.
Gwennap anticipates Apple may have to think different in future. That’s because Apple should match industry trends in order to create a quad-core A6 processor next year, but this may be too hot to run inside an iPhone. The analyst takes this information to suggest Apple may field an A6 inside the iPad 3, and a new version earlier processor inside the iPhone.
Perhaps this is another contributing factor to Apple’s seemingly delayed introduction of the next-generation iPhone? Perhaps the scenario is one in which the iPhone 4S uses an upgraded A4 processor while an A5-powered iPhone becomes scheduled for 2012, when an A6 iPad 3 also appears. This would significantly diversify the product range.Already, when it comes to mobile performance, the A5 is a tiger — faster for 3D performance than Nvidia’s flagship Tegra 2. This is because it carries a 31-square-millimeter graphics processing unit — that GPU alone is as large as the entire surface area of the Tegra 2. What’s the secret? There’s also a touch of mystery about Apple’s A5 design: 33 square millimeters of the chip is extra circuitry that can’t be accounted for. We don’t know what it does: it isn’t for the processor, it isn’t for the graphics processor, audio, Wi-Fi — but at that size (bigger than a Tegra 2 chip) it has to be busy doing something.
Processor manufacturing is currently conducted by Samsung. But, with Apple and Samsung’s mobile division involved in an increasingly bitter courtroom dispute, it seems unlikely this relationship will continue forever. This must be why Apple is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing to bring that firm online as processor maker.
There’s another option too, and highly-placed executives at that firm seem willing to dance with Apple. Apple “helps shape” Intel... [ Read More (0.4k in body) ]

With a slew of Android phones set to hit market, why is Apple apparently passing up WWDC platform to announce iPhone 5? With a slew of Android phones set to hit market, why is Apple apparently passing up WWDC platform to announce iPhone 5? Also why is it not dealing a sucker punch to Android by announcing superior features iPhone fans have been waiting for? Android smartphones and tablets are going to flood the US market soon. There is a new launch, leak or rumor every day. It looks like about ten new Android devices are going to hit deck this summer trough various networks. And there is rumoured launch of many more over the next several weeks. Yet, as rumor has it, Apple is blasting past the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) without saying anything about the iPhone 5 - nothing about features and specifics, and nothing about the possible release date. Is it a strategic move, sales-wise or otherwise, or is the consumer giant just smugly passing up a big opportunity and letting Android devices wean away more users from Apple’s stables? There is already the allegation that most of the rumored iPhone 5 features are already on Android OS-based devices. iPhone fans could catch up with their Android rival in time if apple were to release its next generation iPhone, whether it is called iPhone 4S or iPhone 5. But is there any confirmation regarding either the specs or release date? At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco on Monday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will unveil the Mac OS 10.7, codenamed 'Lion', and the iOS 5. But there is going to be no announcement regarding when the next generation iPhone will be launched. Gadget market is seeking answers for speculation over iPhone 5 features and specifics and its release date. Tech analysts have split hairs and burnt up midnight's oil groping for answers, but there is none on the horizon. According to most analysts iPhone 5 will not be launched at WWDC next week, which will be a break from tradition for Apple. It would be had to imagine a WWDC getting over without a major product launch, but it looks like a certainty. A quick cut to the Android camp: A slew of Android devices slated to hit market are 4G-enabled, NFC capable, with some having ultra-high resolution cameras. T-Mobi... [ Read More (0.5k in body) ]

iPhone 5 – 1-2 Months Delayed

Those who are waiting to have a go at the iPhone 5 may need to wait for little longer as the iPhone 5 production may be delayed by one to two months, with a slight downtick in the second quarter. "Our checks at multiple levels of the supply chain point to a one-to-two-month delay in the production start for the next-generation iPhone vs. our earlier view of a July production start," analyst Chris Caso at Susquehanna Financial wrote in a note to clients. "Given past history requiring at least two months of production to build inventory in advance of customer shipments, we believe that would point to delivery to customers no earlier than October/November," Caso noted. iPhone 5 was earlier expected to hit the markets in September. The analyst's checks in the past had suggested that production of the next-generation phone would commence in July. However, the visibility for production volumes in the third quarter is uncharacteristically low given that it is now about a month ahead of that planned production start. Caso said though he does not believe a firm production date has been finalized, the production is now likely to begin in either August or September, as some technical issues are to be addressed.
The delay presents a near-term headwind for the Apple supply chain and uncertainty over the start of production has obscured the third quarter build plans. "While we do expect a seasonal rise in 3Q, the magnitude of that rise is difficult to estimate given the apparent production delays," the analyst said. Caso said the second quarter iPhone production volumes are also tracking about 20-30 percent below earlier expectations and he now expects 18 million to 20 million iPhones to be produced in the second quarter, down from an earlier expectation of 24 million to 26 million units.
Much of this appears to be attributed to a reduction in CDMA iPhone production volume, but GSM production volume appears below expectations as well, presumably in an effort to manage inventory ahead of the new platform launch. However, iPad production estimates continue to be strong and Caso raised his second quarter production estimates to 11 million to 13 million units from 10 million to 12 million units.
The next-generation iPhone -- to be called either iPhone 5, or iPhone 4GS -- has been the hot topic of technology enthusiasts as several speculations about its release date and features are emerging on a daily basis. The iPhone 5 is speculated to come with an 8 megapixel camera along with a SIM built-in design, which will not require SIM cards.... [ Read More (0.1k in body) ]

What Will iOS 5 Deliver ?

Apple is putting its best foot forward by overhauling the software platform of the iPhone to offer incomparable user experience in its next generation iPhone 5. The spruced up iOS 5 will not just have bells and whistles but arguably a whole lot of new features that enthusiasts have been waiting for. Here’s a sneak peek into some of the possible hot features of the iOS 5. First, it's reported that the new iOS 5 will make multitasking even more friendly on an iPhone. Analysts have said the new mobile operating system will offer genuine multitasking” for the first time. iPhone 4 had seen vast improvements from the days when multitasking was virtually non-existent in an iPhone. There was a time when the iPhone would shut you out of mail when you wanted to open the browser. The user would be able to open the mail only after closing the browser and vice-versa. With iPhone 4 all those impediments had been cleared and a user could keep the mail running in the background while he got busy with their stuff. If rumors are to be believed, the iOS 5 will make multitasking easier still. The latest version of the software platform of iPhone 5 will let third party apps run seamlessly in the background while the user is engaged in other tasks. By comparison, this facility would be a world apart from the iOS 4 which had essentially made switching apps faster. Secondly, the iOS 5 will make it easier to upgrade an iPhone 4 with the latest software. 9to5 Mac had reported earlier Apple's new iOS would facilitate over-the-air updates. According to nextiphonenews, the anticipated version of iOS 5 will have 'backwards compatibility' a feature that helps it make different devices sync easily. "This is great for people who are currently using the iPhone 4 and are not planning to buy iPhone 5." There is also speculation that the upcoming iOS 5 will work for no-home button devices which will just make use of the gesture-based home trigger although this remains just a possibility, according to nextiphonenews. Another feature could be enhanced wireless printing capabilities. Apple had announced AirPrint Wireless Printing for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch in November last year. Rumors doing the rounds suggest that significant improvements on this feature can be expected in iOS 5. One guess is t... [ Read More (0.1k in body) ]
