"Barrett was passing through Union Station from Whitby, clad in his 85-pound scale armour, when he was "thrown into a bench" and held at gunpoint while the police dumped out his backpack and rifled through its contents... Barrett is "champion of Twilight Peak" and weapons safety officer for a 15th century role-playing game called AMTGARD."
Apparently his foam weapons are being linked to terrorism. Hopefully his armor has a +20 against bullets. LARPing The Toronto Train System |

Following last week’s threats from U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel directed at those offering unauthorized movies and music, yesterday saw indications of the first clear action. Under the banner “Operation In Our Sites”, authorities targeted nine domains that are claimed to have offered first-run movies without consent from the copyright holders, a serious criminal offense under U.S. law. “Criminal copyright infringement occurs on a massive scale over the Internet, reportedly resulting in billions of dollars in losses to the U.S. economy,” said Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, whose office handled the warrants authorizing the seizures of seven of the domains. The seven seized domains are TVShack.net, Movies-Links.TV, FilesPump.com, Now-Movies.com, PlanetMoviez.com, ThePirateCity.org and ZML.com.

Finland is now the first country in the world where every citizen is entitled to high-speed Internet connection, starting today. A similar plan for the United States faces hurdles and will likely take years to come to fruition. As of July 1, "every Finn will have the right to access to a 1 megabit per second broadband connection," with a goal of a 100 mbps connection by 2015.
We have reached ... the distant future, where broadband internet access is as much of a right as water, in Finland. Year 2010, Where Broadband is a "Right" in Finland |

"Wachovia, it turns out, had made a habit of helping move money for Mexican drug smugglers. Wells Fargo & Co., which bought Wachovia in 2008, has admitted in court that its unit failed to monitor and report suspected money laundering by narcotics traffickers -- including the cash used to buy four planes that shipped a total of 22 tons of cocaine... Wachovia admitted it didn’t do enough to spot illicit funds in handling $378B for Mexican-currency-exchange houses from 2004 to 2007. That’s the largest violation of the Bank Secrecy Act, an anti-money-laundering law, in U.S. history." Wachovia Helped Launder Narco Cash |

"Holy crap! Woot has signed an agreement with Amazon - yes, the Amazon - to become an independent subsidiary of the ecommerce colossus. Woot HQ will remain in Carrollton, Texas, and will operate as autonomously as other Amazon companies like Zappos and Audible. More details forthcoming." Damn, there goes my "underground" tee shirt supplier. :( Woot To Be Acquired By Amazon |

"This week, the American Lung Association issued a strong recommendation for the military to discontinue the use of open-air trash burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan... The military authorized more than a hundred burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan. The largest were operated by private contractors Halliburton and KBR, designed to burn everything from military equipment to medical supplies, batteries and hazardous waste... "Chinese people should soon find it easier to browse the web as domain names written in Chinese win approval. Net address overseer Icann has approved the creation of domains that use only Chinese characters. The decision builds on earlier work to create internationalised domain names (IDNs) using with non-Latin characters." Internet Domains With Chinese Characters Approved |

"Secret Russian agents were assigned to live as married couples in the United States, even having children who were apparently unaware of their parents' true identities. A spy swapped identical bags with a Russian official as they brushed past each other in a train station stairwell. Messages were written with invisible ink, hidden in the data of digital pictures, and encoded in messages sent over shortwave radio." US Disrupts Russian Spy Network |
