Super Squid Surfaces in the Antartic!
Topic: Science 11:49 am EDT, Apr  7, 2003

] A colossal squid has been caught in Antarctic waters, the
] first example of Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni retrieved
] virtually intact from the surface of the ocean. [...]
]
] "Now we can say that it attains a size larger than the
] giant squid. Giant squid is no longer the largest squid
] that's out there. We've got something that's even larger,
] and not just larger but an order of magnitude meaner."
]
] This squid has one of the largest beaks known of any
] squid and also has unique swivelling hooks on the clubs
] at the ends of its tentacles. This combination allows it
] to attack fish as large as the Patagonian toothfish and
] probably to also attempt to maul sperm whales. [...]
]
] "It's only half to two-thirds grown, so it grows up to
] four metres in mantle length." By comparison, the mantle
] of the giant squid, Architeuthis dux, is not known to
] attain more than 2.25 metres. [...]

Girl beats up burglar
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:35 am EDT, Apr  7, 2003

] Cape Town - A young hockey player and part-time waitress
] used her hockey stick on a would-be burglar and nearly
] beat him to a pulp on Thursday morning.
]
] Shortly after the attempted robbery, Leigh Fourie, 18,
] said she was terrified when she pounced on the would-be
] burglar. She threatened him, called him names and hit him
] with the hockey stick.
]
] Fourie said she woke up in her parents' home in Strand
] about 09:15. Her mother, Evelyn Fourie, had already gone
] to work in Stellenbosch.
]
] "I was drinking a milkshake in the lounge when I heard
] glass breaking. Someone was trying to break into my
] mother's bedroom next door. I crept to my bedroom, closed
] the door and 'phoned my mother, who told me to go outside
] and call the neighbours."
]
] Fourie said she decided to use her hockey stick instead
] because shouting wasn't going to help. Nobody would have
] heard her above the wind. "I ran down the corridor
] shouting, rushing towards the man who had in the meantime
] entered the lounge. "I waved my hockey stick in the air
] and started hitting him on his head, neck, arms -
] wherever I could land a shot. He tried to get away and
] pulled a knife from his pocket, but I told him he should
] put it away, because the police were outside."

Ars Chimera: Living, Genetically Engineered Art
Topic: Science 3:06 pm EST, Apr  3, 2003

"Dmitry Bulatov is one of a small, but growing, number of artists around the world who are using genetic engineering to create a new form of art known as Ars Chimera, or transgenic art, named for a creature from Greek mythology that had a lion's head, a goat's body and a dragon's tail.
Bulatov, the curator of the Kaliningrad branch of the National Center for Contemporary Art, heads the Consciousness on the Alert (Soznaniye Nastorozhe) project, in conjunction with Moscow's Ivanovsky Virology Institute. One of the goals of the project -- which Bulatov said is currently on hold due to lack of funding -- is the creation of a naturally fluorescent cactus, which scientists would create by introducing genetic material from bioluminescent, or naturally glowing, organisms (in this case, a jellyfish and a sea anemone) into a Lophophora Cactus."

Jello: Bad ASS. I want to play... anyone ever actually use the old Nuts n Volts gene splicing kit?

Delicate threads of spider's silk are about to solve a major problem in photonics: how to make hollow optical fibres narrow enough to carry light beams around the fastest nanoscale optical circuits.

To make the fibres, Yushan Yan and a team of engineers from the University of California at Riverside give the silk thread a glassy coating, and then extract the silk by baking. They soon expect to be able to make hollow fibres with cores just two nanometres wide - or 50,000 times thinner than a human hair.

Fox news ticker speaks out against NYC protesters
Topic: Current Events 2:57 pm EST, Apr  3, 2003

] Fox News had its own response to the demonstrators. The
] news ticker rimming Fox's headquarters on Sixth Avenue
] wasn't carrying war updates as the protest began.
] Instead, it poked fun at the demonstrators, chiding them.
]
] "War protester auditions here today ... thanks for
] coming!" read one message. "Who won your right to show up
] here today?" another questioned. "Protesters or
] soldiers?"
]
] Said a third: "How do you keep a war protester in
] suspense? Ignore them."
]
] Still another read: "Attention protesters: the Michael
] Moore Fan Club meets Thursday at a phone booth at Sixth
] Avenue and 50th Street" - a reference to the film maker
] who denounced the war while accepting an Oscar on Sunday
] night for his documentary "Bowling for Columbine."
]
] The protesters said Fox's sentiments only proved their
] point: that media coverage, in particular among the
] television networks, is so biased as to be unbelievable.
