Charlotte Observer | 07/30/2003 | Falling tree kills parents, child
Topic: Current Events 9:37 am EDT, Jul 31, 2003

] A tree fell on a car during a storm Tuesday, killing a
] father, mother and their older daughter in a shopping
] center parking lot, authorities said.
]
] A second daughter was cut from the wreckage and flown to
] Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Firefighters spent
] 40 minutes sawing through the tree and then had to cut
] the crushed car apart to free the crying 18-month-old.

This is just sad. Another case of in the wrong place and exactly the wrong time. It goes on to say how the tree was "4-foot-thick tree splintered about 15 feet up its trunk".

I enjoying bursting this type of bubble. Since the release of Netware 6, Novell has changed to a new licensing scheme that is far far better than their old one. Their previous scheme is what Microsoft currently uses. Each user must have a license for each server, so if you have 200 users and three servers you will have to have 600 licenses to function. Novell now uses 1 license per connection no matter how many servers. So using the same model we would only need 200 licenses.

I actually got to see the virtual office product in action this past weekend. Many people will see it like the online class system inside of the Blackboard web application. It holds a forum for the members of the virtual team, a java chat application similar to IRC, access to your email, a shared calendar and shared bookmarks.

Also they have revamped a product called "Branch Office" server. It uses rsync and a few other open source utilities to maintain a remote office server. Holding a copy of the files on the remote server on the main network server. There is a good deal more information on the Novell web site.

Movie Industry Unveils Anti-Piracy Public Education Campaign (TechNews.com)
Topic: Society 6:20 pm EDT, Jul 27, 2003

] The movie industry announced a broad new anti-piracy
] public education campaign today, with commercials set to
] appear on all six broadcast television networks, more
] than two dozen cable channels and in 5,000 movie theaters
] nationwide.
]
] The ads are scheduled to launch at the same time on all
] participating channels during prime-time telecasts on
] Thursday. They also are slated to run between previews
] showing before Friday night's movies. Encompassing one
] 30-second and five 65-second spots, the campaign asks
] consumers not to digitally download unauthorized versions
] of movies they may find on the Internet.
]
] The spots feature actor Ben Affleck and "Titanic"
] director James Cameron, but they focus on
] behind-the-scenes movie employees, such as set painters,
] security guards, costumers, editors and theater
] concessionaires who make up the bulk of the industry's
] 580,000 workers. The point of the campaign is to persuade
] illegal downloaders that they are stealing paycheck money
] not just from multi-millionaire stars but from regular
] working folks -- folks like them.

Now I have seen some fairly good rips of movies on the net over the last few years. The general quality of stuff most people can download is very poor and just serves to wet my appetite. Instead of targeting the pirates how bout promoting the higher quality of the DVD to the public. The masses will pay for a good quality product.

US House of Representatives nixes FCC rules expanding ownership

Novell Forge : Help Requests
Topic: Computers 10:05 pm EDT, Jul 22, 2003

I really wish I could submit a few links in one post but this will have to do. Now many people know that I am a fan of Novell and do enjoy using their products. Earlier this year Novell announced that they will be adding support for Linux for many of their products. For this task they have started http://forge.novell.com . They are in the progress of porting some of their software to linux and also attempting to take things from linux and put it into Netware.

I have already seen SSH and some other open source tools run on Netware. I can't wait to see where this is going to end. So if you have a few minutes take a moment to look through the project list and see if there is something you would like to play with.
