"I talked to the own of Cafe Coco today, and we have come to an agreement concerning a barter - to work for food. He has several outdoor tables that are in disrepair, and are in need of new and more durable tops. So, I will be covering them with mosaic tile. It's a chance for me to be a little creative, as well as earn more of my keep. "

Looking for a target, one analyst chooses Dow 6,300
Topic: Markets & Investing 1:52 pm EDT, Oct  8, 2002

""I am definitely watching 7,500 on the Dow 30. If we break there and get another good leg down, coupled with dumb money chasing bonds via mutual fund flows into bond funds, I think we can set a good, long lasting low -- especially with small investors chasing performance in the bond funds as they chased equity performance near Nasdaq 4,500 (in year 2000)," the strategist says from his New York office."

Last caveat? "Unless we get a Fed Funds rate cut or a massive short squeeze via a volume surge, I feel we are close (to a bottom). But in a perfect world I would like to see one more crack, a big surge in pessimism," Lane says. That Dow 6,300 low, he says, "would create, dare I say it, better valuation levels for equities, which would probably allow for a more sustainable advance."

Microsoft to offer financing
Topic: Business 1:20 pm EDT, Oct  8, 2002

"MICROSOFT CORP., Redmond, Wash., is getting in on the action by lending some of its cash to help companies buy its software. The world’s largest software company has established a small unit, called Microsoft Capital, whose mission is to drum up business with low-interest loans and leases."

Vendor financing didn't work in the '90s, doubt it will work here.
This time though, Microsoft has the reserves and not get injured.

"The Dot-Com Card Game
Here's your chance to go back to 1999 and do it wrong, all over again....

BURN RATEâ is based on the experiences of many technologists during the recent rise and fall of the new economy. With a simple, fun, and uncannily realistic game system, you and your friends will struggle to keep a dot-com startup afloat as the bad business pours in and the money runs out.

Be the last one in business, and you'll win the dubious honor of "Best CEO"! It's great for game lovers, dot-com victims, business students, or anyone that needs some relief from the ups and downs of the economy. "

Chess Champion Kramnik Beats 'Deep Fritz' Computer
Topic: Games 9:39 am EDT, Oct  7, 2002

"World human chess champion Vladimir Kramnik took the lead on Sunday over Deep Fritz, the latest computer star, by winning the second game in a match billed as the "Brains of Bahrain" contest.

Kramnik, playing white, exposed flaws in Deep Fritz's technique with a win in 57 moves. Kramnick now leads the eight-game competition 1.5-0.5 after drawing the opening game on Friday.

German-developed Deep Fritz is capable of evaluating 3.5 million moves per second, but once again it was unable break through Kramnik's rock-solid shield. "

Fool.com: Recession Dip No. 2
Topic: Markets & Investing 10:54 am EDT, Oct  6, 2002

"Contrary to what economists, Wall Street, and the White House are saying, Whitney Tilson believes that we are on the verge of -- if not already experiencing -- the second dip of the dreaded "double-dip" recession.
I don't claim to be an economist, and, as a bottom-up investor, I generally pay little attention to macroeconomic forecasts, but the current consensus among economists that the U.S. economy has stabilized and will soon bounce back strikes me as so wrong that I feel compelled to respond. I think we're likely on the verge of -- if not already experiencing -- the second dip of the dreaded "double-dip" recession."

Forbes.com: Keep Your CEO Out Of Grad School
Topic: Business 2:49 am EDT, Oct  6, 2002

"Think formal education helps in business? Think again. Chief executives who went to graduate school don't seem to make any more money for their shareholders than those with no advanced degree. MBAs may actually do worse than those with no advanced degree, although they fare better than lawyers. "

Traffic jam at school caused by kids' golf carts
Topic: Cars and Trucks 12:17 am EDT, Oct  6, 2002

Kids in an upscale Georgia community aren't taking the bus to school or riding their bikes - they're driving golf carts.

And the principal at McIntosh High School says all those carts are creating a traffic jam.

Teens as young as 15 are allowed to drive golf carts in Peachtree City. Matt Herbel, a 10th-grader, says it's getting tough to find a parking space. He wants the school to build a parking lot just for the students' golf carts. But school officials say there's not enough land on campus for a new lot.

Meanwhile, police are warning they may ticket or tow illegally parked golf carts. The kids might have to walk home.
