"It's a saga that brings together Bill Gates, Bernie Ebbers, Bill Miller--and even Warren Buffett. It travels from the Flaming Gorge Dam to the very backbone of the Internet, but mostly to downtown Omaha. And it may just be the most unexpected survival tale of the telecom era. Monday, super investor Warren Buffett ( news - web sites) jolted the nearly prostrate telecom industry by leading an investment of $500 million in Level 3 Communications. Telecom companies now are so reviled, and Buffett is so worshiped, the investment is like the prom queen deciding to dance with the greasy kid who broke both legs of the star quarterback by accidentally running him over in the school parking lot before the first game. Beyond the surface, the potential intrigue could get fascinating. This is where the soap opera aspects come in. Buffett's investment could set in motion a complex web of relationships and -- if you play it all out in just the right way -- put Bill Gates ( news - web sites) in charge of every fiber-optic line in the USA. This stuff is layered on top of Monday's congressional hearings, during which new WorldCom management threw tomatoes at old WorldCom management, which liked Level 3's founder and CEO, James Crowe, about as much as homeowners like termites. Read the rest...great prediction checkmate? |

Senior administration officials, including Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge and Attorney General John Ashcroft, met Monday at the White House to discuss the latest information on terrorist threats. They agreed the nation is on "yellow," or "elevated," status. A snow fence security perimeter encloses portions of the Mall around th Washington Monument in preparation for the nation's July 4 celebration. According to the five-step color-coded threat assessment used by the White House Office of Homeland Security, yellow is the mid-point color, meaning the government considers the nation to be at a "significant risk of terrorist attacks." "Orange," or "high," is the next level -- meaning the government considers there to be a "high risk of terrorist attack." "Red," or "severe," is the highest alert status, and means just what its name implies. What personal security level are you at? It should be Yellow! |

"Chad Struer has played golf with almost 20 Fortune 500 CEOs. One in three cheats, he says. Struer finds that rather peculiar, because those same CEOs hire him and his Salinas, Calif., company, USA Diligence, to investigate the honesty of start-up companies so the CEOs can decide whether to invest. How did it happen? I'm not really sure. One minute we were swimming in stock options, slurping up Starbucks, and hauling our increasingly yuppified butts into work each daythe next we were reeling from the market collapse, shaking our heads, and feeling strangely relieved. As phone calls from newly laid-off friends flooded through the wires and co-workers started dropping like flies around our ears, we made one of the most deliciously irresponsible decisions of our adult lives: we decided to travel the world. The hardest thing about leaving for the unknown was deciding to leave. That, and figuring out what we needed to do, check, bring. We started thinking about creating a place where would-be bohemians could go for "The Big Is"-- information and inspiration. And thats how emergencyexit.net was born.
