Do you use the Internet at work? I see lots of hands. You may not realize it, but your access to the Net is most likely mediated by some kind of firewall. Companies are spending thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of dollars on these systemsand trust them to protect their networks from snoopers and intruders. A few weeks ago, I wrote a weblog entry about Microsoft's perception that Mac OS X uptake is too slow, versus my experience that users are moving to OS X in droves. I decided to do an informal poll. I sent a message to Dave Farber's IP (Interesting People) mailing list, asking: I'd love to hear from IP readers who have adopted OS X. Were you switching from OS 9, Windows, Linux, or Unix? Are you still using your old system as well, or fully switched?
Read the results...Most people I know is all saying the same thing. /me licks Mac OS X. :) Mac OS X Switcher Stories |

Fed up with his brokerage statements, Paul Entin got out of it -- not the market, just his broker. Back in 1999, the president of a marketing and communications firm opened an E*Trade (ET:NYSE - news - commentary - research - analysis) account because the online broker had fewer fees and restrictions than bricks-and-mortar rivals. As the stock bubble burst, Entin sold his losers but saw nothing he wanted to buy. So he held steady. But then a $25-per-quarter inactivity fee, used to eke profits from customers who rack up little in transaction fees and have balances less than $5,000, began appearing on his statements. "I was livid," says Entin. "I closed the account a month ago. I didn't want to buy or sell something this quarter just so I could avoid some fee. I don't like being pressured into doing something."

An aging Berlin playboy has come up with an unusual offer to lure women into his bed by promising the last woman he sleeps with an inheritance of about $244,000. Rolf Eden, a 72-year-old west Berlin disco owner famous in the German capital for his countless number of sex partners, said he could imagine no better way to die than in the arms of an attractive young woman -- preferably under 30. "I want to pass away in the most beautiful moment of my life. First a lot of fun with a beautiful woman, then wild sex, a final orgasm -- and it will all end with a heart attack and then I'm gone." Interesting page about the Al Qeada gassing the dog footage recently "discovered" by CNN. 08/19/02 "WAG THE GASSED DOG" This is the purest war propaganda. One video of what may be Osama bin Laden plus a video of a dog being gassed which could have been created anywhere equals the US sinking to new lows trying to manufacture support for a war nobody but the oil companies want. This dog-video reminds me of Hill & Knowlton's much ballyhooed claim that Iraqi troops were stealing incubators from Kuwait hospitals and leaving premature babies to die on the floor. The m130 -- whose slogan is "as colorful as your life" -- can really display only 58,621 colors, not 65,536 colors, said company spokeswoman Marlene Somsak. "We discovered that indeed the screen delivers about 11 percent fewer colors than we had believed," Somsak said. She said the product was designed to display the full 65,000 colors, but was not actually built in a way that would allow the display of so many colors. Palm feeling blue over color claim mistake |

From his interview:
"I believe its time for people to prepare for a vast economic disaster, which will include a deflationary crash and an economic depression as bad or worse than the one suffered in the early 1930s." What should we do? My book is subtitled How To Survive and Prosper in a Deflationary Depression, and it will tell you exactly how to..
