Agriculture was taking root in South America almost as early as the first farmers were breaking ground in the Middle East, new research indicates. Evidence that squash was being grown nearly 10,000 years ago, in what is now Peru, is reported in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

If you're still using terms like "bling" and "pimp your [insert consumable]" to show how down you are with the kids, then perhaps you're also interested in wearing your new iPhone as a belt buckle in support of your poser persona. In fact, why not strap on a set of speakers too and show everyone just how ghetto you really are. Ok, ok, we'll admit, the design (bottom picture) shows some promise and the cats at Maya are only in the early stages (as in, the iPhone's only been out for 13 fargin hours) of their how-to. Besides, we know how desperate you are to show off your new gadget. Believe us, we know. Peep some early samples of the speaker-less version of the belts after the break.

The Senate subpoenaed the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney's office Wednesday, demanding documents and elevating the confrontation with President Bush over the administration's warrant-free eavesdropping on Americans. Separately, the Senate Judiciary Committee also is summoning Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to discuss the program and an array of other matters that have cost a half-dozen top Justice Department officials their jobs, committee chairman Patrick Leahy announced. Leahy, D-Vt., raised questions about previous testimony by one of Bush's appeals court nominees and said he wouldn't let such matters pass. "If there have been lies told to us, we'll refer it to the Department of Justice and the U.S. attorney for whatever legal action they think is appropriate," Leahy told reporters. He did just that Wednesday, referring questions about testimony by former White House aide Brett Kavanaugh, who now sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. The escalation is part of the Democrats' effort to hold the administration to account for the way it has conducted the war on terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The subpoenas extend the probe into the private sector, demanding among other things documents on any agreements that telecommunications companies made to cooperate with the surveillance program.

And the 2006 DARWIN AWARD Winner is... |

HIGH ON LIFE: "Take a deep breath..." (3 June 2006, Florida) Two more candidates have thrown themselves into the running for a Darwin Award. The feet of Jason and Sara, both 21, were found protruding from a deflated, huge helium advertising balloon. Jason was a college student, and Sara attended community college, but apparently their education had glossed over the importance of oxygen. When one breathes helium, the lack of oxygen in the bloodstream causes a rapid loss of consciousness. Some euthanasia experts advocate the use of helium to painlessly end one's life. The pair pulled down the 8' balloon, and climbed inside. Their last words consisted of high-pitched, incoherent giggling as they slowly passed out and passed into the hereafter. Sheriff's deputies said the two were not victims of foul play. No drugs or alcohol were found. The medical examiner reported that helium inhalation was a significant factor in their deaths. A family member said "Sara was mischievous, to be honest. She liked fun and it cost her."

Wiener Stadtwerke vs Owen Pallett |

Wiener Stadtwerke are the leading water, gas and electricity provider in Vienna, Austria. They also provide public transportation and run a huge undertaking business... Well, those who live in Vienna and watch TV or go to the movies sometimes, have probably seen the new commercials. Here's the song they use: http://www.wienerstadtwerke.at/WienerStadtWerke/DOWNLOAD/WSTW_music60_final_1.mp3 They claim that the name is "Wohlfhlsong" (=feel good song) by an artist named NASCO. I tried Googling that artist, but nothing came up. And now compare the song to the beginning of Final Fantasy's "This is the Dream of Win & Regine." Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8PZ8-cpWc4 You will probably agree that the two sound very much alike! Final Fantasy is a Canadian one-man-project by violin player/singer/songwriter Owen Pallett. He recorded "This is the Dream of Win & Regine" for his 2005 debut album "has a good home c.d." He sued. If you would like to support Owen Pallett and tell Wiener Stadtwerke what you think of all this, there is a handy "Kontakt" link on the top right corner of http://www.wienerstadtwerke.at But mostly, I'm just posting it to make people aware of what's going on... I just got this message from a friend in Vienna, Austria. She is a music biz grad from Belmont in Nashville. Looks like the guy got ripped off. Wiener Stadtwerke vs Owen Pallett |

A spokeswoman for a Louisville amusement park said one person was injured Thursday during a ride at the park. Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg said the accident happened around 4:45 p.m. on the Superman Tower of Power. Goldberg said the extent of the injury was unknown. WAVE-3 television in Louisville reported the victim was a 13-year-old girl whose legs were severed during the ride. The ride takes passengers straight up 177 feet before a free-fall of 154 feet, reaching a speed of 54 mph. Goldberg said it's unclear at what point during the ride the person was injured. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Louisville EMS said it could not comment on the extent of the person's injuries due to privacy laws
Someone said a cable snapped and hooked her legs. But this seems odd as that everyone else was ok... What was this cable? Looks like the media has her age from 12 to 16... Rider Seriously Injured At Ky. Kingdom |

June 21, 2007 Dear Mr. Groce, Thank you for taking the time to contact my office to share your concerns about S. 1105, the upcoming hate crimes legislation. Your input is important to me, and I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts. As you know, S.1105 was introduced in the Senate on April 12, 2007. This bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. If S. 1105 should come before the Senate for a vote, I will not support it. Thank you again for your letter. I hope you will continue to share your thoughts with me over the next six years. Sincerely, Bob Corker United States Senator
Seems to me that these 2 day a week, piles of puke dont have the best interests our country in mind. Looks like another person who supports violence and inequality, FYI Republican Party... Corker FUD on Matthew Shepard Act... |

Zap2it Labs Kills Public TV Data... |

For several years we have offered a free TV listings service to hobbyists for their own personal, noncommercial use. In October of 2004 we posted here an open letter saying the future of Zap2it Labs was at risk because of certain growing misuses of the Zap2it Labs data. Unfortunately this misuse has continued and grown. These misuses, combined with other business factors have led to the decision to discontinue Zap2it Labs effective September 1, 2007. We thank those users who have honored the terms of the agreement, and we suggest you consider the many TV listings options offered by the commercial licensees of TMS TV listings data. If you would like to discuss how to license TV listings for commercial use, please let us know by e-mail (labs@zap2it.com) and include your company name, telephone number and the best time to reach you. We will respond to your inquiry as soon as possible. We anticipate this decision will generate discussion and invite you to respond via the Zap2it Labs forum. We will do our best to respond to relevant questions posted on this forum in a timely manner.
