The Geography of Scotch Whisky
Topic: Recreation 10:25 am EST, Nov 25, 2004

] The rugged terrain of Scotland has enduring travel
] appeal, particularly for Americans who have so much of
] Scotland scattered across their bloodlines. There is an
] aspect of visiting Scotland that I keep with me at all
] times, before after and during a trip, and that is the
] geographically informed enjoyment of Scotch whisky.

I'm a scotch whiskey person.

I find that there are three different archetypes for appreciators of strong spirit. You have your: a) vodka person b) tequila person c) whiskey person. (Rum and Gin don't count. Rum's sole purpose is to be mixed. Gin's sole purpose is to be mixed with tonic water and a small wedge of lime.)

Anyways here's a nice starter guide to scotch whiskey. They even have a nice little map (http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jhb/whisky/scotland.html) of scotland with the location of each distillery labeled, though it's missing both the islay and jura distilleries.

TIMBALLO Recipe at Epicurious.com
Topic: Recreation 2:28 pm EDT, Oct 12, 2004

] We've taken the timpano and simplified it into a
] timballo, a molded casserole without a pastry crust. For
] added flair, arrange the ziti in a decorative pattern as
] you make the first layer of the timballo.

I have a food named near to me! If this isn't a postive affirmation on life I don't know what is.

Airport Codes: A History and Explanation
Topic: Recreation 12:22 pm EDT, Apr  6, 2004

] History, rather than geography, solves the puzzle of BNA,
] TYS, GEG, OGG and MCO. The main airport in
] Nashville, Tennessee, was named in honor of Col.
] Harry Berry who helped build it: BNA. Knoxville, also in
] Tennessee, doesn't have a single letter in common
] with its tag of TYS; however, a historian would
] know that the Tyson family donated the land in
] honor of their son killed in World War I.

Some interesting factoids if you fly alot...

New Way for Teenagers to See if They Bounce
Topic: Recreation 3:59 pm EST, Mar 28, 2004

Six members of two restless clans called the Street Ninjas and Gravity Pac circled each other at Grand Central Terminal last Sunday. ... Satisfied, they started clasping hands, knocking elbows and throwing down French slang.

The spread of parkour into the woods of Georgia and the deserts of Arizona occurred almost entirely through the boundlessness of Internet message boards.

"The American scene is a sleeping Joe at the moment," he said, adding that it is only a matter of time before an American leader emerges.

"You need an open mind, and away you go."

Transatlantic divide? Says who?
