Linus leaves Transmeta, goes to OSDL to work full-time on kernel
Topic: Linux 12:14 pm EDT, Jun 17, 2003

] The other big news - well, for me personally, anyway - is
] that I've decided to take a leave-of-absense after 6
] years at Transmeta to actually work full-time on the
] kernel.
]
] Transmeta has always been very good at letting me
] spend even an inordinate amount of time on Linux, but as
] a result I've been feeling a little guilty at just how
] little "real work" I got done lately. To fix that, I'll
] instead be working at OSDL, finally actually doing Linux
] as my main job.

] Snif. I'm actually all teary-eyed.

Its been predicted for awhile that Linus would move to OSDL.

Crackpots are funny [sci.physics]
Topic: Physics 12:54 pm EDT, Jun 16, 2003

Crackpots are funny. Especially when they post their "theories" about how or why "Newton was wrong", "Einstein was wrong", "Newton's critical error", "Einstein's BIGGEST BLUNDER", "Why in the last 400yrs of physics has been a LIE".

Humanity please note this is the exact method to get your scientific ideas totally ignored... even by other crackpots.

Okay I had to update this... here's some links to this jackass:

Or you could just goto google groups and search for `smart1234 "smart model" theory'. The guy is a pile of bad ideas.

DIVE AND DISCOVER: Expeditions to the Seafloor
Topic: Science 11:08 am EDT, Jun 11, 2003

Quick story:
Get some scientists, throw them in a boat. Make them go out 500mi east of New England and dive to deep coral reefs to study ancient weather patterns. (+ fun pretty pictures and swimming robots)

Detailed story:
The hypothesis states that the cyclical (over many many years) movement of the deep North Atlantic causes dramatic weather changes affecting the entire planet. To test the theory coral in the north atlantic will be sampled to reconstuct past weather conditions.

A fundemental problem in the understanding Earth's weather pattern is the movement of deep ocean currents. Specifically it seems (http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/gccourse/alumni/ocean/ocean.html) that the movement of warm north atlantic water down to the equator acts like a meteorilogical "engine" driving climate change. But very little is known about the "engine" part.

The New England Seamount is a large ridge in the middle of the atlantic ocean. It rises steeply out of the sea floor and is direct line with these north atlantic ocean currents. By studying the composition of the coral rock scientists are able to backsolve and figure out what ancient weather was like.

Security Implications of IPv6 - Mike Warfield
Topic: Computer Security 7:54 pm EDT, Jun 10, 2003

The size of the IP6 address space makes scanning for victim computers in a properly managed network as difficult as a brute force attack on an encryption system. Of course, it also makes scanning your own network for backdoors and trojans just as difficult. Furthermore, crackers are using IPv6 to encapsulate traffic, hiding it from intrusion detection systems.

This is a fun paper if you are into network security.

This is a day to not go to the beach.

Be the first on your block to start hoarding supplies. There are only 300k shopping days left.

so as you may or may not know the author of this article is the author and distributor of a few open source projects, one most notable project is the Airjack project...this is a tool (a driver actually) for raw 802.11 frame injection and the sort, its what i used to break things for my blackhat lecture...

i no longer actively maintain this project, but i still distribute it, and ill give help on it...and if someone has a really good question i really help and sometimes expand functionality...

anyways, i get email all the time about it, most of it them are asking for support on some level, most are actually polite, respectful, ie, dont piss me off...

every now and then i get a gem, one that is in leet speak, from the most vial script kiddie that has ever picked up a keyboard...id like to share some of the anger and frustration with you, the anonymous internet goer, in the hopes that i can somehow cathartically dispell these feelings...

----

ok first thing you need to know is this...if you are asking a stranger for free software that they spent time to write and make useful, then you are asking them for a favor...believe me there are many projects i work on and very very very few i make public...so if you have any troubles with it, go about things as you would when asking a stranger for a favor...

i cant begin to tell you how often i get people upset because i didnt help them adiquitely in their eyes, or because i wont add a feature, or because it is hard to install, ive even been accused of embedding malicious viruses in my OPEN SOURCE code (something very untrue, its open source for god's sake)...

some ground rules before you ever email a free software project maintainer...

1) know what the program/tool is, that includes what its supposed to do, the general type of program it is (driver, user space application, command line, x app, etc), what os it runs on, what os it doesnt run on...and again, what its supposed to do...you'd think that would be a prerequisite for even wanting a thing, but nope, later you'll see its not...

2) if you have trouble installing the program, this is not my problem...i clearly already have this installed and sence i owe you nothing, i have no obligation to help you install it...that said i made it public because i wanted to share, so i am more than happy to help you install it...

3) i dont write documentation because i like writing documentation...so if i have any, documentation, i have it there to help you, not me, i already know how it works...so read the documentation and dont ask me to paste it to you in email...the documentation is faster and bothers me less...

4) if you find a bug, its not my problem, i might fix it, i might not, your bug is your problem, not mine, if it works for me then im happy...thats not to say that i wont fix the bug, what that means is i have no obligation to fix the bug...believe me 99 times out of 100 im mo... [ Read More (2.3k in body) ]

Mixing it Up (Or Not)

Granular flow is an area of interest to me. It's so cute and requires little actual money to do very interesting science.

Neutrino beam could neutralise nuclear bombs
Topic: Physics 10:46 am EDT, May 16, 2003

Some japanese scientists have designed an accelerator to zap nuclear weapons with a high energy beam of neutrinos. When the neutrino interacts w/ the neutron it will cause the neutron to decay. If you do this to enough of the nuclear material the chain reaction will not be able to sustain itself and no "boom".

We'll just overlook the generation of rouge alpha (He+ particles) and high speed neutrons which will probably cause a lot of radiation poisoning.

Full title of arvix article is: [hep-ex/0305017] Observation of a Narrow Resonance of Mass 2.46 GeV/c^2 in the D_s^* \pi^0 Final State, and Confirmation of the D_sJ^*(2317)^*

This is *wonderful* news. I wanted to just post the link now. I'll read thru the pdf (http://arxiv.org/pdf/hep-ex/0305017) later this afternoon, and post some of my observations about the dual resonance.

New Physics is Good Physics.
