We're sure somewhere Drew Curtis's head is exploding over this one: submitted for your perusal, one California State Senator Carole Migden -- former voter for a state bill that fines people for using their cellphones while driving -- rear-ended her state-issued SUV into a Honda sedan on Highway 12 in Solano County, today. While on her phone. The driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital with minor injuries,
Maybe she should let Corzine drive next time. Senator who voted for anti-cellphone-driving law crashes car -- while on the phone - Engadget |

Virtual Hallucinating Device Drives Police Insane for a Day |

Being crazy is hard, but it's worth the effort. Especially if you're a cop, paramedic, or social worker who may someday need to deal with a person having a psychotic episode. At those times, empathy can be crucial. That's where Virtual Hallucinations comes in. The training device, created by Janssen L.P., is a rig with earphones and goggles that plunges the wearer into the mind of a serious schizophrenic. The system offers two interactive scenarios. In one, you're riding a bus in which other riders appear and disappear, birds of prey claw at the windows, and voices hiss, "He's taking you back to the FBI!" The other features a trip to the drugstore, where the pharmacist seems to be handing you poison instead of pills, and hostile customers stare at you in disgust.
I hope apple includes something like this in the next generation iPod. Virtual Hallucinating Device Drives Police Insane for a Day |

Global warming is going to have a giant product rollout.
Somehow, I think this is a big portion of the credibility problems. Those who are on the fence about the causes of global warming don't trust the politics and rhetoric. I think energy solutions have value beyond global warming. Most of the short term solutions are fairly pointless. Looking to fix a sinking ship with bandaids is a bad idea. Law will not change nature, including human nature. If a technological solution is not found, we're fucked. The global warming propaganda machine capitalizes on fear the same way the war on terror does. The democrats need to claim that they're trying to save the world too. Will the war on global warming be any more effective than the war on terror? Architecture - Al Gore - Green Buildings - Energy Efficiency - New York Times |

The government has overturned its proposed ban on the creation of human-animal embryos and now wants to allow them to be used to develop new treatments for incurable diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. The proposal, in a new draft fertility bill published today, would allow scientists to create three different types of hybrid embryos.

In September 2006, the October edition of the Japanese anime magazine Newtype first reported that the new cinema series "Rebuild of Evangelion" would be released in the summer of 2007. [1] On September 9, 2006, GAINAX's official website confirmed that "Rebuild of Evangelion" will consist of four movies. The first three movies will be an alternate retelling of the TV series (including many new scenes, settings, backgrounds, characters), and the fourth movie will be a completely new conclusion to the story; the series is intended to be accessible to non-fans[2]
It's only been a little over a decade and they're already remaking Evangelion... Although since it has the same director/writer as the original, and considering how the original ended I suppose this might also be a sequel. It will be interesting to see if they make Eva more coherent or less. Rebuild of Evangelion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

Google's EyeBox counts eyes in public - Engadget |

Not content just tracking you when you're surfing the web, Google announced plans today to count eyeballs in physical spaces. Big G is partnering with a company called Xuuk to distribute the EyeBox, a palm-sized camera that can record how many times viewers look at billboards or products in brick-and-mortar stores. The $1000 camera isn't the world's most high-tech gadget -- it simply shines a beam of IR light and counts how many times it sees redeye in the ensuing images, indicating that the subject was looking right at the camera -- but it's a big upgrade over previous systems, which cost over $25,000 and required subjects to remain perfectly still. Xuuk says the EyeBox works up to 32 feet away and doesn't require any sort of calibration, and that it collects no data other than how many times people have looked at a particular object. The simplicity of the system, however, means that each billboard or product requires its own separate Eyebox for tracking. While we're not sure advertisers are going crazy to drop a cool grand per billboard, we're certainly not going to underestimate their love of counting eyeballs, or Google's ability to turn viewing statistics into cold, hard cash. We're also curious to hear if the camera can see through sunglasses -- cause we're about to start wearing ours 24/7.
