Convenience store chain 7-Eleven plans to hand out nearly 3 million free Slurpees today to celebrate its 80th birthday. Each year on July 11, the chain hands out free Slurpees to mark 7-Eleven's founding in suburban Dallas in 1927. The company expects to give away close to 3 million drinks in 7.11-ounce cups today. And when it comes to selling the semi-frozen beverage, Bob Stella is the Chicago area's Slurpee king.

“The average full-time worker doesn’t even start doing real work until 11:00 a.m.,” he writes, “and begins to wind down around 3:30 p.m.” The Microsoft survey pointed to worthless meetings. What appears to be wasted time is really jell time.

If all goes as planned, the convenience store chain plans to refit 11 stores across the U.S. -- Richmond is an unlikely choice -- to resemble the front of the Kwik-E-Mart, the convenience store that Homer and other characters frequent in the classic cartoon TV series.

A brilliant idea is neither necessary nor sufficient for a successful business, although all else being equal it can't hurt. Microsoft is probably the canonical example of a successful business, and it has never had a single brilliant idea in its entire history.

MemeStreams user terratogen has posted up some thoughts about the Arby's logo on his other blog. I hate Arby's. I've only eaten there twice, and both times I've gotten food poisoning. First time I thought it was a fluke.. frottage. | The Arby's Logo... |

Contracts are being canceled, deals are drying up, prices are starting to drop. The psychology is shifting even as thousands of new homes and condos join the for-sale listings each day - so the downward pressure will only get worse. Speculators who bought overpriced condos in hope of a quick killing are going to get hosed.
Hold on to your hats. Welcome to the dead zone |

I think the biggest problem with e-commerce and pay for content type sites (including music, movies, etc.) is that it expects real cash for virtual service. The internet needs a reliable system of monopoly money for virtual values. Everyone who uses the internet has the ability to earn virtual value which then can be used for other content all based in a fake economy. Let content pay for content. Hell, think of how kick ass Bittorrent would work if everyones supplied bandwidth could actually be cashed in on. For the first time, a person's intellectual clout will be worth its own rewards. Someone needs to make this. |
