Man peed way out of avalanche
Topic: Miscellaneous 7:13 pm EST, Jan 29, 2005

A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer...

[...]

He said: "I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it. It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there."

distributed.net: Node Zero
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:58 am EST, Dec 13, 2004

Yay for distributed computing! If you aren't already running some distributed computing software, you should be. Your average computer activities like IM, web browsing, and word processing take less than 10% of your processor power on average. The distributed.net client runs at the lowest priority on your system and takes all your idle processor power. Right now they're brute force cracking 72 bit RC5 encryption as part of RSA Security's $10,000 encryption challenge. If you find the winning key, you can win up to $2,000 and all it costs you is a few more watts since your processor is always working at full load.
