Indiana Court: MySpace postings are free speech - Yahoo! News
Topic: Internet Civil Liberties 8:10 pm EDT, Apr 10, 2007

A judge violated a juvenile's free-speech rights when he placed her on probation for posting an expletive-laden entry on MySpace criticizing a school principal, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled.

"While we have little regard for A.B.'s use of vulgar epithets, we conclude that her overall message constitutes political speech," Judge Patricia Riley wrote in the 10-page opinion.

In February 2006, Greencastle Middle School Principal Shawn Gobert discovered a Web page on MySpace purportedly created by him. A.B., who did not create the page, made derogatory postings on it concerning the school's policy on body piercings.

The state filed a delinquency petition in March alleging that A.B.'s acts would have been harassment, identity deception and identity theft if committed by an adult. The juvenile court dropped most of the charges but in June found A.B. to be a delinquent child and placed her on nine months of probation. The judge ruled the comments were obscene.

Young students face felony charges for computer trespass
Topic: Internet Civil Liberties 10:32 am EDT, Aug 10, 2005

The password administration used to configure filters was on the back of the laptops. The students took advantage of it. NOW:

"The information we have received indicates that out of the ~300 boys in grades 9 - 12, 80-100 were involved with the "unauthorized access" and 1 out of every 20 boys in grades 9 to 11 was charged with a felony. This reflects a terrible system failure. The administration needs to admit their responsibility in the breakdown of security and discipline during the rollout of this experimental laptop program."

EFF needs your help identifying printers with ID info
Topic: Internet Civil Liberties 12:08 am EDT, Jul 28, 2005

In this preliminary research paper, we explain what we've observed so far, briefly explore the privacy implications, and ask you to print and send us test sheets from your color laser printer and/or a color laser printer at your local print shop. That way, we can watch the watchers and ensure that your privacy isn't compromised in ways that harm your fundamental constitutional rights.

FBI seizes Indymedia's Server from Rackspace
Topic: Internet Civil Liberties 9:13 am EDT, Oct 11, 2004

Its just crap. They come in and subpeona Rackspace for the servers. Rackspace can't even tell the Independant Media why.

If it were not for the Independant Media's coverage of the NYC demonstrations during the Republican convention, I would still be believing that the mainstream media was more fair and balanced than some folks say.

The confiscation of the server has caused the Independant Media to no longer be available in places.

I wonder what would have happened if this had been CNN's hardware that was confiscated? Or Fox's?

They can come in and mirror a drive in no time to study. If they have to have the original they could at least leave a mirror. Why take the equipment? Is it OK for the FBI to take anyone's Internet business (data) away at a whim?

BTW, there is more detail on this at Cryptome.org. www.cryptome.org
