"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Decline of Middlebrow Culture
Topic: Society 11:53 am EDT, Jun 20, 2005

Was it the intellectuals who replaced Toscanini and "Playhouse 90" with "Mr. Ed" and "Gilligan's Island"? Was it the intellectuals who shifted resources away from opera reviews in Time magazine and toward celebrity puff pieces in People and its various epigones?

Ultimately, it was the bottom line that destroyed American middlebrow culture.

I have to wonder how many questions on standardized tests are devoted to appreciating the works of Faulkner or Hemingway. How can we expect children to establish a love of learning when we take all of the exploratory fun out of it? Not everything can be boiled down to a multiple-choice question.

In the 1950's and 60's, the middle class looked longingly at the upper class. Now, the American middle class aspires not to the values and sensibilities of the privileged classes of half a century ago, but to the wealth and power of the new class of celebrity rich.

Why all the screaming at Dean?
Topic: Politics and Law 9:40 am EDT, Jun 11, 2005

"Dean, who noted he is a white Christian, infuriated members of both parties by merely stating an undeniable truth. A recent CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll found 82 percent of Republicans identify themselves as white Christians, while 57 percent of Democrats said the same."
....
..."The party is more comfortable with passive figures like John Kerry, whose presidential candidacy flamed out largely because of his inability to deliver straightforward answers and opinions.

Dean has no such inhibitions. He energizes masses of young people and disenfranchised Democrats through his direct - though sometimes over-the-top - comments. Dean says what he believes and doesn't back down - two traits Kerry has yet to learn.

Dean is also among few Democrats who can criticize Bush's decision to go to war without being disingenuous. That's because most Democrats - including Kerry and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton - supported Bush's decision at the time and are guilty of the same shortsightedness they conveniently blame Republicans for having.

Dean is an electric figure who could be one of the party's stars - if they would let him. Instead, the Democrats remain in a state of nirvana, lacking both leadership and direction."

Why all the screaming at Dean?

Yesterday's Nightmare
Topic: Surveillance 6:23 am EDT, Jun 10, 2005

Colleges have zombies all over the place. I worked in collegiate IT - its just a mess. Academic Freedom and all that. (Which is great, and I support, but it makes it very hard to control access to a network.)

I had a problem when I went to work at a college - at first my boss really suspected me of being some sort of ebil debil hacka because I happened to know something about it, and because I knew their wireless was wide open, and probably because I had made a KITTY TREATS can antenna. NEVER MIND that I came to the college from a respected security company, with an impeccable work background. It was more likely because, 4 years ago - I knew that orinoco gold cards were the shiz.

No, it was that kitty treats antenna, and the fact that my 'esoteric' (laugh) knowlege of networks was maybe a bit threatening to someone. Could this be the case with you?

I understand. Luckily they didn't ever call big brother to me because they were always afraid big brother would take their servers again without leaving them a backup.

I always did my best to play as dumb as I could and stay hidden, and only come out railing about security issues - read AGAINST this or that -when I felt the network was REALLY threatened.

Good luck. Keep cool, play dumb, find out who the fragile ego is.

Kerry's Yale Grades Similar to Bush's
Topic: Politics and Law 9:17 am EDT, Jun  8, 2005

Sen. John F. Kerry's grade average at Yale University was virtually identical to President Bush's record there, despite repeated portrayals of Kerry as the more intellectual candidate during the 2004 presidential campaign.

Kerry had a cumulative average of 76 and got four Ds his freshman year — in geology, two history courses and political science, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

"I always told my dad that D stood for distinction," Kerry said in a written response to reporters' questions.

LOL! I found this story pretty amusing. Though it immediately makes me wonder: Why now? Why didn't this come out during the campaign?

I thought the same thing. Which do you want? bozo 1 or bozo 2??

Oxytocin makes investors more trusting
Topic: Biology 11:36 pm EDT, Jun  2, 2005

When I first saw the word "oxytocin" I thought this was an article on breastfeeding. Every mom that has ever nursed KNOWS that oxytocin letdown feeling - and it is really quite a weird experience.

I was quite suprised to see that this article was about INVESTORS' reaction to it. They become more TRUSTING.

Now, I am sitting here with my head cocked to the side wanting to know who was behind funding that particular study and WHY?
