"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

N.Orleans mayor 'shocked' by pre-Katrina Bush video
Topic: Politics and Law 9:51 pm EST, Mar  2, 2006

Russ Knocke, spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, said the video shows discussions that have been in documents previously made public. "I'm not sure what is shocking about this video. There's really nothing new or insightful from it," he said.

How about it exposes President Bush as a liar, that Chertoff was an active hindrance to getting anything done, and that the one guy on the feds side who didn't have his head shoved all the way up his ass was, of all people, Michael Brown?

A scary what-if? an alarmist over-reaction? Some food for thought about the very possibility?

"So Much More to Know …
From the nature of the cosmos to the nature of societies, the following 100 questions span the sciences. Some are pieces of questions discussed above; others are big questions in their own right. Some will drive scientific inquiry for the next century; others may soon be answered. Many will undoubtedly spawn new questions."

Arab Company, White House Had Secret Deal - Yahoo! News
Topic: Current Events 5:33 pm EST, Feb 23, 2006

In approving the $6.8 billion purchase, the administration chose not to require state-owned Dubai Ports World to keep copies of its business records on U.S. soil, where they would be subject to orders by American courts. It also did not require the company to designate an American citizen to accommodate requests by the government.

And it comes out... Someone at the White House cut an under the table deal on this.

And the more you find out about 'the deal' the weirder and weirder it gets.

RE: Sect Allowed to Import Its Hallucinogenic Tea
Topic: Society 5:31 pm EST, Feb 23, 2006

Absinthe causes liver damage and is not much more than a synthetic codeine. (I've got a lot of wormwood in my yard if you want some. lol)

I was very glad to see this decision. Hallucinogenic drugs have long been used in religion. (And if you notice, these religions really ARE quite peaceful!)

The real problem with these drugs has been that they have lost their religious context. I am glad to see that hallucinogens might have a place again.

Hmmmm....

Now I think this is just the American rebel spirit taking hold. Should I apologize for loving being Western? Where nothing can be held sacred - I CELEBRATE the Virgin Mary piece of toast sold on Ebay. How about a picture of Mohammed found on a pig's left testicle?

Warning: These are terribly offensive and could cause people to get killed.

Shall I file this under humor?

OK what then? Sometimes things are so tragic and messed up I just have to laugh.

Wow. I didn't know that ISLAM taking literally teaches that people that convert should be killed.

That's heavy. THAT is scary.

Curious George collaborator found dead
Topic: Current Events 5:36 pm EST, Feb 14, 2006

The bloodied body of a collaborator on the children's book series Curious George was found Tuesday morning covered in black garbage bags in the driveway of his impeccably landscaped mobile home.

This is absolutely terrible but sometimes you want to blog things like this because the press won't pay much attention to them.

Professor states that the FAT epidemic is a FAT lie
Topic: Non-Fiction 5:35 pm EST, Feb 14, 2006

"Like most Americans, Oliver says he, too, believed there was a real obesity epidemic worthy of the constant hand-wringing and dire warnings of everyone from health officials to the diet industry.

He says he was like the rest of us - until he started doing some research. The conclusion of the University of Chicago political scientist: The people with the most to gain from our constant obsession over our weight are the weight-loss industry and diet doctors."
