"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Interesting Insight into Hushmail thanks to John M. Karr
Topic: Computer Security 11:00 pm EDT, Aug 28, 2006

At this link: http://www.co.boulder.co.us/da/dl/E-mails%20scanned.pdf, which is a record of emails between Michael Tracey and John Mark Karr as well as several investigators on the JR case, I find that page 66 is rather interesting.

It seems that a FREE Hushmail account might be safer to have than a premium account! In any event, I always find such trivial information as this useful to file away. I thought some other members here might like this trivia tidbit as well.
----------------------------------------------
(From the PDF)

"I spoke with the Hushmail lawyer, Steve YOUNGMAN, yesterday. FYI, the best contact number for YOUNGMAN is 604-893-8699.

With respect to the account in question, YOUNGMAN advised the following:
1. The account is active (created Sept. 2005)
2. The account is non-premium (free; basic service)
3. No IP address logs are available, to date.

YOUNGMAN also advised me of the following:
A. There is no user registration information available for the account, as it is not a 'premium' account.
B. IP Addresses could be logged, with the appropriate judicial authorization.
C. A significant amount of e-mail message content exists, with the most recent message having been sent on the day of my enquiry (May 17, 2006.)

YOUNGMAN has taken a 'snapshot' of the data associated to the suspect account, thereby preserving/archiving it until such time there is a COURT ORDER to release that data to law enforcement.

Unless there is a Canadian connection to your homicide (besides the fact that the Hushmail servers are located there), you will have to pursue an MLAT. I wish I could do something to expedite your requiest, however, without a crime having been committed in Canada, I would not be able to back a US-authorized search warrant. "

eBay stores closing by the hundreds
Topic: Cyber-Culture 7:47 pm EDT, Aug 24, 2006

EBAY25.78, -1.24, -4.6%) raised the amount it charges to run an online store. By raising store fees an average of 6%, eBay was hoping many stores would close up shop, thus engineering a return to a mix of lots of auction listings -- its most profitable product -- and a tiny sliver of items listed for sale in stores, which generate much less revenue for the firm.
Currently, there is about four times the number of items listed for sale in stores than in auctions on eBay.
The imbalance has hit eBay hard. During the second quarter ending July 19, eBay said its profit dropped 14% from a year earlier.
Shares of eBay closed down $1.22, or 4.5%, at $25.78.
So far, the storefront rate increase appears to be achieving eBay's aim of shedding ties to independent stores.

NFS + SSH = SSHFS
Topic: Technology 4:28 pm EDT, Aug 22, 2006

SSHFS is a really nice piece of software, because it just makes your life just a bit easier. It can 'mount' a directory of a remote SSH server and you can use it as a normal directory.

About time.

The Trees that Survived Hiroshima
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:26 pm EDT, Aug 22, 2006

At the end of World War II on August 6, 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima by the Americans. The plants and trees in the area around the epicentre were examined in September 1945. Among the survivors were the four Ginkgo biloba trees shown on this page. They were situated near the blast center and appeared to bud after the blast without major deformations and are still alive today.

Therefore the Ginkgo is regarded as the 'bearer of hope'.

2001 Phone Conversation of John Mark Karr about JonBenet Ramsey

"JonBenet. God, what a powerful thing, to just be alone with that little girl. That doll face. You know she was just so incredible in mind and so unreal in death. She's just so alive. She's so alive. She's so alive. I mean she's wonderful."

"While the case against John Mark Karr disintegrates by the minute, New Times has learned that this isn't the first time Colorado University Professor Michael Tracey has caused a stir by fingering a "prime suspect" in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case — only to be proved wrong"

The Internet Makes You Stupid
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:20 pm EDT, Aug 17, 2006

When people post on any forum, whether it's a serious Mozart discussion forum, Something Awful, or PayMeToHumpThings.net, they usually act in a manner that's presentable to the outside world. Of course they do, because someone else is going to read that and they wouldn't want to look like a fruitcake in front of everybody. But behind that relatively normal exterior there are things they're wondering about and want to know, and they type these things where they think nobody will ever see them, like into search engines for example.

If you're more of a nerd than most, (and let's face it, you're reading Something Awful) you probably heard that a week or two ago AOL mistakenly released 3 months of logs from its AOL Search engine, and now the logs are all over the place online. AOL has already apologized for the error, but they shouldn't because these are some of the most awesome things I've ever seen.

Before we get down to business, let me explain what's happening in these images. One of our forum goons, xGryph, coded up a nice little search tool to let us easily look through the 2 gigabytes of logs. The big number on the left is an anonymous user ID AOL provided so advertisers or researchers or whoever's looking at the logs can track an individual account's search habits. Next to that is the search term used.

Someone pointed out this link to me
