"The Dec. 26 earthquake that devastated parts of Asia was recorded by microphones at the island of Diego Garcia. The recording of the quake has been made available by scientists at Columbia University. The scientists used the recording to follow the earthquake's path. They discovered that it occurred in two phases, moving south to north. The scientists' methods may one day result in faster warnings as earthquakes occur. They also could help with relief. The noise studies could show exactly where ruptures have occurred, helping to pinpoint areas that have suffered damage."
