"Kofi Annan's speech was a pithy and eloquent challenge to unilateralism by major powers, but it was President George W. Bush who gave the evening's decisive performance. His eloquent appeal asking the U.N. Security Council to hold Iraq accountable seems to have garnered the international support he needs for an attack on Baghdad. " Bush Hectors U.N. Into Submission |

"Powell, who favors international coalition-building and multilateral action, has made new allies for America. He has been the principal voice in this administration arguing against the long-term efficacy of military solutions either to the Palestinian-Israeli crisis or to our own ''war on terrorism.'' Neither Rumsfeld nor Cheney possesses Powell's diplomatic skills or the larger worldview required to win friends among nations whose populations look different and think differently than they do." "U.S. President George W. Bush did as he was asked, taking his case for an attack on Iraq to the United Nations Sept. 12. But rather than allow the U.S. plan to be stalled by bureaucratic sandbagging, Bush implied a harsh ultimatum to the United Nations: Either enforce the resolutions that you passed and that Iraq has mocked for more than a decade, or the United States essentially will abandon the institution." "A year after the Sept. 11 attacks, criticism of the detainees' treatment has lessened, but questions are increasingly being asked about what will happen to them. In a report released Thursday, Amnesty International complained the prisoners are in 'legal limbo' and are routinely denied the right to see lawyers, both serious breaches of their human rights. Foreigners See U.S. as 'Greedy Bully' |

"While the president was moving to address Congress's concerns about his foreign policy, his secretary of state was getting booed Wednesday at an international conference in Johannesburg, South Africa. ~~~~~~~~ As the United States debates going it almost alone against Iraq, the question of whether anti-U.S. views are on the rise is more than academic. State Department officials are sufficiently concerned about growing anti-American sentiment in Europe and Russia, as well as the Middle East, that they have invited a select group of scholars to address the topic at a private conference that started this past Thursday. " Seeking to build a case Saturday that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction, President Bush cited a satellite photograph and a report by the U.N. atomic energy agency as evidence of Iraq's impending rearmament. But in response to a report by NBC News, a senior administration official acknowledged Saturday night that the U.N. report drew no such conclusion, and a spokesman for the U.N. agency said the photograph had been misinterpreted." White House: No Link Between Iraq Policy, Oil Price |

"The White House said on Friday that President Bush's decision on whether to use military force to remove Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein would not be influenced by the effect such an attack would have on the price of crude oil or on the American economy. (White House spokesman Ari Fleischer) urged Congress to pass a pending energy bill that the White House hopes would allowing drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. The Bush administration wants to tap the refuge's potential 16 billion barrels of oil to help reduce U.S. reliance on foreign crude from unfriendly countries like Iraq. " In a world-wide oil market, which is what we have, 16 billion barrels of oil would last less than a year (world demand is about 76.4 million barrels per day, out of 16 billion, equals about 209 days). Is it really worth it to risk ruining the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska? Why not look to the future and try to reduce U.S. reliance on ANY crude oil? I seriously doubt the proposed war against Iraq, like the last Gulf war, has "nothing to do with oil". White House: No Link Between Iraq Policy, Oil Price |
