" Selling a war requires a combination of arrogance and wishful thinking. That's why it is an article of faith in the White House that military action in Iraq will be swift and sure; the Iraqi people will laud the invading Americans as liberators, and democracy will follow sure as spring after a hard winter." "It may play out the way President Bush wishes, but wishing is not a strategy. Bush has yet to level with the public about the potential cost in lives, Americans and Iraqis, the countless billions of dollars and the decade-long commitment this will take." Rosy Scenario |

The White House scorned an Iraqi leader's suggestion that President Bush and Saddam Hussein could resolve their differences in a duel, calling it an "irresponsible statement" that did not justify a "serious response." Now wait a minute.... hear me out on this one... they might be on to something here... "A president against a president and vice president against a vice president, and a duel takes place, if they are serious," the Iraqi vice president said. "And in this way we are saving the American and Iraqi people." You know... it's just so crazy it might work! ;-) W.H. rejects Bush-Saddam duel offer - Oct. 3, 2002 |

"-- In a strong challenge to the Bush administration's policy on Iraq, former Vice President Al Gore said Monday any unilateral action the United States might take against Saddam Hussein could distract from the war on terrorism. "I think specifically the Congress should establish why the president believes that unilateral action would not severely damage the fight against terrorist networks," Gore said during a 55-minute speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. "Great nations persevere and then prevail," Gore said. "They do not jump from one unfinished task to another. We should remain focused on the war against terrorism."
