Was GWB Wearing a Wire?
Topic: Current Events 6:43 pm EDT, Oct 12, 2004

Jury is still out of the validity of the accusations made on these photos. Some initial thoughts:

* Aren't wires really really small these days?
* Bush did fairly poorly in that debate, would think he would've done better if he was wearing a wire.

What does Memestreams think?

Article was uber-long so I'll have to read it later. Macs are SOO tempting these days.

Tales of Plush Cthulhu
Topic: Recreation 5:15 pm EDT, Oct  6, 2004

Once upon a time, in a part of the house where grownups rarely visited, there was the Land of the Stuffed Animals. It was a happy place where all the animals got along (as their hearts were as plush as the rest of them)

...But one day the stuffed animals discovered a strange looking thing.

Another site in a similar vein: www.spamgourmet.com

As a side note, the security hole of non-password protected temporary email accounts is interesting, and honestly is not something I had thought of.

Photoshop Currency Detection
Topic: Technology 7:30 am EDT, Sep 17, 2004

As many of you know, modern color copiers/Photoshop detect currency and refuse to scan/open such images. There has been some work in reverse-engineering what algorithms are used to determine what is currency. I am very much interested in expanding this work towards the end of creating false positives. [Think like a T-shirt that when worn would make you difficult to photograph, or artists discreetly embedding such watermarks inside photos that they dont want photoshopp'ed, etc.]

Consider this a call for any comments/knowledge relating to this issue.

The Panda's Thumb
Topic: Science 4:51 am EDT, Sep 15, 2004

Saw a mention on this blog by the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP). Suffice to say, as it is the only time I've ever heard of _any_ blog mentioned (much less one I've never heard of), I decided to investigate. Apparently alot of evolutionary biologists (famous and non-famous) post here.
