IBM Unveils New PowerPC (The Next Mac?) CPU
Topic: Computers 11:18 am EDT, Oct 15, 2002

"While Intel and AMD offer new PC processors with 533MHz and 333MHz bus connections to system memory, IBM this week will unveil a new PowerPC processor with a 900MHz bus capable of funneling the CPU up to 6.4GB of information per second. Widespread speculation has it that IBM's first customer will be Apple Computer, which will drop its current Motorola PowerPC G4 processors in favor of the faster new IBM chip. "

Flirting With Mac OS X
Topic: Computers 12:04 pm EDT, Sep 25, 2002

I was immediately attracted by a very intriguing and pleasant desktop on the laptop's gorgeous screen.

I watched in jealous disgust as the guy next to me fired up a terminal window and ssh'ed to some server and ran a pine mail session.

That's it, I decided. I am going to get a Mac OS X laptop, too.

That was a few weeks ago.

Unix guru Moshe Bar loves his titanium G4 PowerBook (even though he skimped on the RAM). Who settles for 512 MB when you can have 1 GB?

Mac OS 10.2 Reviewed
Topic: Computers 1:56 pm EDT, Aug 22, 2002

"When Apple unveiled its Mac OS X operating system a couple of years ago, the company's chief executive, Steven P. Jobs, explained that it offered two important benefits. First, Mac OS X (pronounced "ten") rests on a superstable, industrial-strength foundation called Unix. Second, Mac OS X is so beautiful, "you just want to lick it.""

A Plan for Spam
Topic: Computers 12:42 pm EDT, Aug 16, 2002

Stop. Spam. Dead.

One great advantage of the statistical approach is that you don't have to read so many spams. Over the past six months, I've read literally thousands of spams, and it is really kind of demoralizing. Norbert Wiener said if you compete with slaves you become a slave, and there is something similarly degrading about competing with spammers. To recognize individual spam features you have to try to get into the mind of the spammer, and frankly I want to spend as little time inside the minds of spammers as possible.

Security warning draws DMCA threat
Topic: Computers 8:45 pm EDT, Jul 31, 2002

Hewlett Packard has found a new club to use to pound researchers who unearth flaws in the company's software: the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Invoking both the controversial 1998 DMCA and computer crime laws, HP has threatened to sue a team of researchers who publicized a vulnerability in the company's Tru64 Unix operating system.

In a letter sent on Monday, an HP vice president warned SnoSoft, a loosely organized research collective, that it "could be fined up to $500,000 and imprisoned for up to five years" for its role in publishing information on a bug that lets an intruder take over a Tru64 Unix system.

Xserve - a rack mounted 1U Mac!
Topic: Computers 8:03 pm EDT, May 15, 2002

I don't know how these things perform, but you gotta love the idea of a 1U rack mounted Mac based on BSD. Even the remote management / monitoring capabilities look reasonable. I can feel the cockles of my warming in delight.

Future of UNIX GUIs? This definitely seems like a worthy effort. If you haven't been paying attention you might need to see the AtheOS website among others.
