"Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind... War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today." -- John F. Kennedy |

Reasonable. And looks like it's been updated regularly for 6 years, which is pretty good for this kind of collection. Usually these go to rot at some point. Davin's collection of unix programming links |

Some idiot pro-war/Bush-supporter just told us, on TV, how we've had "8 years of peace and this is what we got." This was in reference to the WTC incident and the bombing of Afghanistan. Anyway, his ignorance was very humorous. I was curious what the actual number of years looked like and this link has a pretty decent chronological list of U.S. military history. An excellent synopsis of the man with the brilliance to understand the the possibilities of computers. They would have come about regardless, but this man really was the first HACKER in many ways. He saw the problem, he hypothesized the solution, and in a way created the solution. Alan Turing is, undoubtedly, one of the great (troubled, but truely) geniuses seen throughout history. I encourage everyone to explore his story. It's incredibly valuable. As someone with a limited knowledge I can't tell you much, but you can start in the most simple way by reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. And this is also one of those times I am going to BITCH that I can't get reasonable cross-linking (multiple topics) to Tom and Nick. BBC News | UK | Alan Turing: Father of the computer |

Interesting article/interview with Edward Said. One of the more striking pieces that is particularly relevant to my current personal experiences: "What is quite worrisome is the absence of analysis and reflection. Take the word 'terrorism.' It has become synonymous now with anti-Americanism, which, in turn, has become synonymous with being critical of the United States, which, in turn, has become synonymous with being unpatriotic. That's an unacceptable series of equations. The definition of terrorism has to be more precise, so that we are able to discriminate between, for example, what it is that the Palestinians are doing to fight the Israeli military occupation and terrorism of the sort that resulted in the World Trade Center bombing.
