"Kofi Annan's speech was a pithy and eloquent challenge to unilateralism by major powers, but it was President George W. Bush who gave the evening's decisive performance. His eloquent appeal asking the U.N. Security Council to hold Iraq accountable seems to have garnered the international support he needs for an attack on Baghdad. " Bush Hectors U.N. Into Submission |

"Federal sources involved in the investigation said they believe the three men - all U.S. citizens - were playing a stupid joke on another restaurant patron who gave them a suspicious look." You're sitting in a restaurant with your buddies on a road trip. Some idiot redneck walks in and starts looking at you like you must be a terrorist. You make fun of her. She calls the cops. 12 hours later you're being held in a van southern Florida while the FBI pulls your car apart with a robot. The worst part of this is that the stupidity hasn't stopped yet. They are still holding them. They are looking to charge them. They still have the road closed. Gotta blame someone for our stupidity. God this is ridiculous... Foreigners See U.S. as 'Greedy Bully' |

"While the president was moving to address Congress's concerns about his foreign policy, his secretary of state was getting booed Wednesday at an international conference in Johannesburg, South Africa. ~~~~~~~~ As the United States debates going it almost alone against Iraq, the question of whether anti-U.S. views are on the rise is more than academic. State Department officials are sufficiently concerned about growing anti-American sentiment in Europe and Russia, as well as the Middle East, that they have invited a select group of scholars to address the topic at a private conference that started this past Thursday. "Are you the kind of person who believes that attaching a plastic American flag to your SUV makes a major patriotic statement? If so, you're no doubt anticipating the looming anniversary of the September 11 attacks with the enthusiasm of a nine-year-old on Christmas morning. Then there's the rest of us. Don't get the rest of us wrong. We love America too. But we are understandably tense as we approach what is likely to be the greatest orgy of cheesy sentimentality, naked political opportunism and rank corporate necrophilia in this country's history. White House: No Link Between Iraq Policy, Oil Price |

"The White House said on Friday that President Bush's decision on whether to use military force to remove Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein would not be influenced by the effect such an attack would have on the price of crude oil or on the American economy. (White House spokesman Ari Fleischer) urged Congress to pass a pending energy bill that the White House hopes would allowing drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. The Bush administration wants to tap the refuge's potential 16 billion barrels of oil to help reduce U.S. reliance on foreign crude from unfriendly countries like Iraq. " In a world-wide oil market, which is what we have, 16 billion barrels of oil would last less than a year (world demand is about 76.4 million barrels per day, out of 16 billion, equals about 209 days). Is it really worth it to risk ruining the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska? Why not look to the future and try to reduce U.S. reliance on ANY crude oil? I seriously doubt the proposed war against Iraq, like the last Gulf war, has "nothing to do with oil". [ Originally from seanonymous. --Rek ] White House: No Link Between Iraq Policy, Oil Price |

"Here in Britain, the United States' staunchest friend, snide remarks and downright animosity greet many Americans these days. It's not just religious radicals and terrorists who resent the United States anymore." ... "Around the world, from Western Europe to the Far East, many see the United States as arrogant, hypocritical, self-absorbed, self-indulgent and contemptuous of others," Peterson says. "This is not a Muslim country issue. It has metastasized to the rest of the world and includes some of our closest European allies."

"The US Supreme Court has narrowly decided, by a vote of five justices to four, that state funds can be used to pay for religious schools. The ruling is a victory for the religious right, which wants the biblical story of creation taught in schools instead of evolution." Now this is the type of thing that just makes me pissed. This is just blatent disregard for the constitution in my opinion. New Scientist- 'Creationist victory' in US Supreme Court |
