Black Francis - Bluefinger |

On September 11th 2007, something happened that will change Rock n' Roll forever. A watershed moment of sorts occurred. Charles Thompson (aka Frank Black) resumed using his original pseudonym, Black Francis, and released what is likely the most important album of the past several years. Bluefinger is just amazing. It's a return to the style Thompson made famous with The Pixies. It sounds like the album you'd expect Thompson to have made after The Pixies, more so than the work he did as Frank Black with The Catholics. Thompson's solo work as Frank Black is straight up rock n' roll, with ventures into country and alternative. His new solo work as Black Francis is a return to a style more similar to that of The Pixies or Nirvana. It's raw, loose, driving, punk influenced alternative rock. It's not over-produced. It sports a sound that you can only get when you put away the polish and focus on the intensity. It's like a breath of fresh air. Almost everyone I know has been listening to this album the past week. If you are not listening to it, you should be. Get on the band wagon. You can listen to the entire album from the website. We believe: * You shouldn't have to think about backup. Backup should be set up once, and then work automatically. * Your files should be encrypted. Your backup files should be encrypted and stored in a secure, remote location that's only accessible to you — from anywhere. * Your backups should be smart. Your backup system should be smart enough to only back up data that's not already been backed up, only back up parts of a file that have changed, and be able to back up open and locked files.
I'm trying out this service. It's free up to 2G, and only $4.95 a month for unlimited. Sounds too good to be true. I'll be sure to post my experiences with it. Mozy Online Backup: Simple, Automatic, Secure |

Bush Wants Universal Health Coverage |

President Bush would like to see some form of universal health coverage for all Americans before leaving office next year, a Cabinet official said Monday. But, Mr. Leavitt said, the president would "like to see the larger debate begin" regarding health care - an emerging issue in the next election. "The very best opportunity we have may well be in the next 15 months," he said. Mr. Bush's intentions come on the heels of a universal health care plan offered Monday by Democratic presidential contender Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York.
Are they completely delusional at the White House? If universal health care is something the Bush administration truly cares about, they missed the ball. There is zero chance of them making it a reality in 15 months. Bush Wants Universal Health Coverage |

"A few months ago, Trent Reznor (frontman of the band Nine Inch Nails), was in Australia doing an interview when he commented on the outrageous prices of CDs there. Apparently now his label, Universal Media Group is angry at him for having said that. During a concert last night, he told fans, '...Has anyone seen the price come down? Okay, well, you know what that means — STEAL IT. Steal away. Steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealin'. Because one way or another these mother****ers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that's not right.'"
There was a discussion on MemeStreams about Reznor's distaste for record prices a few months ago.. Slashdot | Trent Reznor Says 'Steal My Music' |

NSA@home is a fast FPGA-based SHA-1 and MD5 bruteforce cracker. It is capable of searching the full 8-character keyspace (from a 64-character set) in about a day in the current configuration for 800 hashes concurrently, using about 240W of power. This performance is equivalent to over 1500 Athlon FX-60 CPUs, which would take about 250kW.
So much for Decius's and Dan's project... Junk Hacked... FPGA-based SHA-1 and MD5 bruteforce cracker... |

"The Republicans in Congress lost their way," Greenspan wrote. "They swapped principle for power. They ended up with neither. They deserved to lose." "It would send a message to Congress that it did not have carte blanche on spending," Greenspan recalls telling the administration. "But the answer I received from a senior White House official was that the president didn't want to challenge House Speaker Dennis Hastert. 'He thinks he can control him better by not antagonizing him,' the official said." "To my mind," he wrote, "Bush's collaborate-don't-confront approach was a major mistake -- it cost the nation a check-and-balance mechanism essential to fiscal discipline." He further wrote that former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill "found himself the odd man out; much to my disappointment, economic policymaking in the Bush administration remained firmly in the hands of the White House staff." Greenspan praised former President Clinton and his attitude toward economic policies, saying, "either Clinton shared many of my views on the way the economic system was evolving and on what should be done, or he was the cleverest chameleon I'd ever encountered." "Clinton was often criticized for inconsistency and for a tendency to take all sides in a debate, but that was never true about his economic policy," he wrote. "A consistent, disciplined focus on long-term economic growth became a hallmark of his presidency."
