This is something I need to take a deeper look at. I have been thinking alot about the changing buisness landscape latley. One of the thing I have said many times: The two forces you don't want to go up against are Technology and Nature, you will always lose. Right now we are walking into a realm where in various degress we _are_ fighting both, and if you don't think its going to become a bigger problem as time goes on you are shitting yourself. On the Technology side, Information is NO LONGER SCARCE. We have shitloads of it and we use it in a totally uneffective way in my opinion. We need filters to deal with this deluge of Information so we can turn it into the Knowledge we desire. I am doing my part to address this. Take this site for instance.. On the Nature side, we have the opposite problem. Natural capital, as the first page here states, is in decline. In America we don't always grasp this, as we have more space per person then any other developed nation. When you see a place like Hong Kong or Tokyo, you see this growing imbalence with nature. At some point, its going to bite us in the ass big time. Climate change is already visable. Energy concerns are not what they should be. Now, most of the world sees this as a problem that they don't want to really think about because its scary and hard to solve. I disagree. I think our greatest opportunities to improve the world around us, our quality of life, and our bank accounts, lie in the solutions to these problems. Its not a bad thing, as long as it gets addressed. I am sure people are looking, and don't get all green-hippy about it, they see dollar signs, not happy rain forests. I think evidence of long term planning for the future in referrence to nature does exist. I have theorized the primary reason that over the past two decades we have seen the 'gas station' as we know it change from a car garage with a gas pump, to a convience store/car wash/etc is part of a long term plan to be 'ready' to handle the changing market when Fuel Cells start to become the driving force of our cars. If you don't require as much maintainence/service, you need other services to use your real estate. The Gas Demons have no incentive to change anything any faster then they need to, but I think I see 'things' that denote some clue. Look who owns the patents on all this technology. At least, thats how I shit myself into thinking that as some point we are going to do someting to fix our energy situation. I'm working on the Technology angle here. If you aren't, read this and do something.. Ok? Natural Capitalism-Creating the Next Industrial Revolution |

"Perhaps it is too much to hope that we will respond to this shattering tragedy as well as the Israelis, who have a long history of preventing similar atrocities by encouraging their civilians to carry concealed weapons and to shoot back at criminals and terrorists. But it is in that policy of a distributed response to a distributed threat, with every single citizen taking personal responsibility for the defense of life and freedom, that our best hope for preventing recurrences of today's mass murders almost certainly lies." Well, ESR is still the voice for all gun carrying libertarian Open Source coders. I like ESR, so I am upset to say I disagree in some way with virtually every sentence in this essay. Its uninformed, biased, and holds no value. He is always biased, but usually fairly informed and tends to make observations with some degree of value. The man is credited with starting the Open Source Uber Alles phenom after all. In short, don't count on holding this one in the same reguard as such fine essays like "Collateral Damage: Reflections on Timothy McVeigh", "Why I am am Anarchist", or the legendary "Ethics from the Barrel of a Gun". He has gone soft! Although I do still fully support his "Geeks with Guns" program. Now if I can only get my tongue out of my damn cheek I would be ok. I want to be ok. Ok is good. We should all be ok.. That would be good. Decentralism Against Terrorism |

"A security processor startup with a design team composed of engineers from Compaq Computer Corp.'s former Alpha operation has introduced a new encryption chip that it claims will shatter the current standards for high-end encryption." If gigabit firewalls actually get affordable, as opposed to the current $400k starting price most of them have right now, my plans will be so much easier to carry out. I would be happy! Happy Rattle! Much better then angry planet-destroying Rattle! Yes? Immagine that! A security startup! Now of all times.. Wow! |

"THE human race is likely to be wiped out by a doomsday virus before the Millennium is out, unless we set up colonies in space, Prof Stephen Hawking warns today." Hawking has been making alot of statments like this latley.. If you remember about a month ago he was saying something about mankind being in danger of extinction if we didn't start re-engineering ourselves with our new-fangled genetic Kung Fu. I totally agree with Hawkings. The man is clearly one of the greatest minds of this or any other generation. I do find it interesting thou that he has become so vocal on this meme of "mankind going away" of late. As I recall, in the past he usually blows off all the "doomsday stuff" with the usual "its billions of years off, chill" thing. Wonder what got him all concerned about mankind's extinction? The market ain't _that_ bad.. Stephen Hawking: Colonies in space may be only hope |

"Broadband is dead. That is the proclamation of tech pundit Robert Cringely. With Excite@Home turning away new customers and going bankrupt along with most of the DSL companies, things are bleak and will get worse. The icing on the cake could be this bill which would remand the requirement for local phone providers to open their networks before competing in the long distance market." And at a different scale, apparently the DSL circuits in Blacksburg, VA (a place which liked to claim it was "the most wired town in America" not long ago) are now full, and turning away residential customers. And here comes the recession!! Whee!! Whelp! What was that? I think I hear a crashing sound coming from Redwood City? Flames look like they are just off the side of the 101. Hmm.. I told those bastards they would rule the day they told me I couldn't smoke dope on installs. Wonder if Covad will survive now that they laied off my friends. We know the Northpoint fuckers are all going to hell for shutting off my DSL.. Slashdot | Broadband Is Dead (Or At Least Very Ill) |

One involved a planned hang-glider attack on the Liman Turra Prison complex near Cairo to liberate Jihad leaders, some of whom had been locked up since the Sadat assassination. According to the plan, Jihad hang-gliders would swoop off a nearby mountain into the prison grounds, setting off explosives and causing a panic to allow the jailbreak to occur. In about 1990, on Mohamed's orders, Dahab said, he took hang-glider lessons in San Francisco. "After I completed a course on the flying of gliders in the United States, (Mohamed) asked me to travel to Afghanistan with a model glider to train the Egyptian elements present there," he said.
