] The state is working with the federal Nuclear Regulatory ] Commission and PSEG Nuclear, which runs the plant, to ] investigate the leak of radioactive water, which is ] around a spent-fuel pool building on the site, according ] to a DEP statement. ] ] According to the DEP, the leak was identified when ] elevated levels of radioactive tritium were discovered in ] ground water and reported last week by the NRC, which ] regulates the nuclear power industry. DEP officials ] confirmed ground water contamination in samples analyzed ] yesterday. From Jessica: Salem 1 started operating in 1977. Oyster Creek went online in '68, I believe. I recommend you move. Now. :) But don't move here... "Millstone Power Station sits on a peninsula on the eastern end of Long Island Sound. The site is 3.2 miles west-southwest of New London, Conn. The station consists of three units: Millstone 1, a 660-megawatt unit, began commercial operation in 1970 and is currently undergoing decommissioning. Millstone 2, an 870-megawatt unit, began commercial operation in 1975, and Millstone 3, an 1,150-megawatt unit, began commercial operation in 1986." Rattle: Oh yeah, I'm well aware I'm living in what will be called the "Dead Zone" at one point or another.. Only I don't define that area as [blank], or Ocean County, but rather New Jersey. ] A bacterial infection that overpowers most antibiotics ] has escaped the confines of hospitals and is showing up ] in alarming numbers among the general public in ] California, according to health officials. For a long time now, this has been one of my pet issues. Just in case you have not heard the line yet, unless you need them, I mean really need them, do not take antibiotics. You will be doing your fellow man a great disservice if you over use them. Also, (easy one) do not spend any more time in hospitals then is necessary. Remember, those germ things evolve faster then you do. I didn't like the "Gay Men" slant of this article.. Left a bad taste in my mouth in reguard to how AIDS wasn't taken seriously till it started killing people enmass who were not gay. Superbugs. Get used to that phrase.. You will have trouble finding someone skilled in the medical field who dosen't think we will see more of them.. The super-bugs have arrived! |

] CIA Director George Tenet has warned of the threat of ] terrorist attacks against targets on U.S. soil or on the ] Arabian peninsula as early as this week. ] Testifying Tuesday to the U.S. Senate Intelligence ] Committee, Mr. Tenet said the United States has ] intelligence information on suspected al-Qaida plots that ] could include the use of radiological dispersion devices, ] known as "dirty bombs," as well as poisons and chemicals. ] The plots are timed to occur as early as the end of the ] Hajj Muslim pilgrimage late this week. Maybe I'm nuts, but immediately after they moved our security status to high, I went to NYC for the weekend. Shrug.. They told me to go about my life as normal.. Normal is a weird thing these days, regardless of terrorism. VOANews.com |

] Last February, Ohio's Davis-Besse nuclear power plant ] shut down after workers discovered that boric acid had ] eaten away at 70 pounds of steel, leaving a 6-by-5-inch ] hole in its reactor head. Only a thin, 3/8-inch strip of ] stainless steel lining protected the reactor from ] rupturing and causing what could have been the most ] devastating nuclear accident since Three Mile Island. This scares the hell out of me. I'm currently living about 2 miles away from Oyster Creek Nuclear in Jersey. Its been operating now for about 15 years pass its design lifetime. There was a stink a few years ago when it was discovered that its dry well was rusting. They don't seem too on top of their shit. Every so often (at least three times now) they mess up the water mix in the stream that cools it down, the stream's temp rises to about 110F, and several hundred thousand dead fish magicly appear. Hope the sucker dosen't melt down on us. Well, at least they were nice enough to give us KI pills.. I don't count on those to do any good in the event of an accident. ] The basic shape is simple - in any system sorted by rank, ] the value for the Nth position will be 1/N. For whatever ] is being ranked -- income, links, traffic -- the value of ] second place will be half that of first place, and tenth ] place will be one-tenth of first place. (There are other, ] more complex formulae that make the slope more or less ] extreme, but they all relate to this curve.) We've seen ] this shape in many systems. What've we've been lacking, ] until recently, is a theory to go with these observed ] patterns. This same pattern is present in the MemeStreams community. Several weeks ago, Decius posted up some of my proof of concept work (http://www.memestreams.net/visual.html) in this area. Since that time, I've been working on code to produce detailed statistics and enable visual navigation of the social network present on MemeStreams. As I'm writing this, I'm flipping over and looking at it, unsure what to say about it. Its cool. You are all going to love it. :) I'll have more to say when its ready to go live on the site. I still have a fair amount of work to do on it. Shirky: Power Laws, Weblogs, and Inequality |
