War in Iraq - How US military radio transmissions are intercepted
Topic: Current Events 11:49 am EST, Apr  2, 2003

] However, security afforded by frequency-hopping methods
] is very dependant on the strict adherence to protocols
] for operating such radios. The US troops and other
] operators of frequency-hopping radio sets frequently
] disregard these protocols. An example would be an
] artillery unit passing digital traffic in the
] frequency-hopping mode, which would enable an
] unauthorized listener to determine the frequency-hopping
] algorithm and eavesdrop on the transmission.
]
] Even when proper protocols for using frequency-hopping
] radios are being adhered to interception and decryption
] of these signals is still possible. The frequency-hopping
] interceptors are special advanced reconnaissance wideband
] receivers capable of simultaneously tracking a large
] number of frequency-hopping encrypted transmissions even
] in high background noise environments.

And then there is GNU Radio..

Yahoo! News - Tobacco Shortage Makes Marines Irritable
Topic: Current Events 8:46 pm EST, Apr  1, 2003

] There is a war on, and danger lurks ahead, and the
] Marines of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry are
] getting desperate — for tobacco.
]
] It's been two weeks since they left they relative
] luxury of their camp in Kuwait and their supplies
] of cigarettes and chewing tobacco are running out.
] They are rationing their precious supplies, and even
] begging smokes from local farmers.
]
] An army, Napoleon reputedly said, marches on its
] stomach. But for generations, armies have also
] marched on nicotine. And these Marines — smoking
] more than usual under the stress of battle
] conditions — are getting antsy.

The horror of war!!

Stupid Academy Award - Bowling for Columbine
Topic: Movies 7:25 pm EST, Apr  1, 2003

] The point is far more fundamental: Bowling for Columbine
] is dishonest. It is fraudulent. It fixes upon a theme,
] and advances it, whenever necessary, by deception. It
] even uses the audio/video editor to assemble a Heston
] speech that Heston did not give, and to turn sympathetic
] phrases into arrogant ones. You can't even trust the
] narrator to read you a plaque or show you a speech, for
] Pete's sake.
]
] The bottom line: can a film be called a documentary when
] the viewer cannot trust an iota of it, not only the
] narration, but the video? I suppose film critics could
] debate that one for a long time, and some might prefer
] entertainment and effect to fact and truth. But the
] Academy Award rules here are specific. Rule 11 lays out
] "Special Rules for the Documentary Award." And it begins
] with the definition: "A documentary film is defined as a
] non-fiction motion picture . . . ." It goes on to say
] that a documentary doesn't always have to show the
] "actual occurrence": it can employ re-enactment, etc.,
] "as long as the emphasis is on factual content and not on
] fiction."

United Press International: Analysis: Russia advises Iraq on U.S. plan
Topic: Current Events 5:03 pm EST, Apr  1, 2003

] Russian military advisers have told Iraqi President
] Saddam Hussein and his government that the main Allied
] drive on Baghdad will not take place until mid-April and
] will then come around the west of the city, Russian
] journalists and analysts with strong links to Russian
] military intelligence now claim.
]
] Strikingly, the Russian analysts, whose work appears on
] the iraqwar.ru Web site, believe that U.S. and Allied
] forces are still overwhelmingly likely to win the war and
] that they are performing in a highly impressive manner.
] The reports are described as "based on the Russian
] military intelligence -- the Main Intelligence
] Directorate or GRU -- reports."
]
] A March 31 report on the site revealed that Iraq was
] receiving analytical advice from Russian officials.
] "Russian military analysts are advising the Iraqi
] military command against excessive optimism," it said.

] AUSTRALIAN military divers yesterday questioned the
] effectiveness of the US Navy's mine-clearing dolphins,
] revealing one had disappeared for two days.
]
] The polite way to express their scepticism about the
] mine-clearing skills of the dolphins is to question their
] reliability and cost-efficiency, but one diver spoke more
] plainly yesterday.
]
] "Flipper's fucked, mate," he said.
]
] "The dolphins have had all this amazing publicity but as
] soon as they put one in the water it shot through.
] There's a war going on and Flipper goes AWOL (absent

] NEAR KARBALA, Iraq, March 31 -- As an unidentified
] four-wheel-drive vehicle came barreling toward an
] intersection held by troops of the Army's 3rd Infantry
] Division, Capt. Ronny Johnson grew increasingly alarmed.
] From his position at the intersection, he was heard
] radioing to one of his forward platoons of M2 Bradley
] Fighting Vehicles to alert it to what he described as a
] potential threat.
]
] "Fire a warning shot," he ordered as the vehicle kept
] coming. Then, with increasing urgency, he told the
] platoon to shoot a 7.62mm machine-gun round into its
] radiator. "Stop [messing] around!" Johnson yelled into
] the company radio network when he still saw no action
] being taken. Finally, he shouted at the top of his voice,
] "Stop him, Red 1, stop him!"
]
] That order was immediately followed by the loud reports
] of 25mm cannon fire from one or more of the platoon's
] Bradleys. About half a dozen shots were heard in all.
]
] "Cease fire!" Johnson yelled over the radio. Then, as he
] peered into his binoculars from the intersection on
] Highway 9, he roared at the platoon leader, "You just
] [expletive] killed a family because you didn't fire a
] warning shot soon enough!"
