Le Grand Content | Clemens Kogler
Topic: Society 11:53 pm EST, Feb 19, 2007

Le Grand Content examines the omnipresent Powerpoint-culture in search for its philosophical potential. Intersections and diagrams are assembled to form a grand 'association-chain-massacre'. which challenges itself to answer all questions of the universe and some more. Of course, it totally fails this assignment, but in its failure it still manages to produce some magical nuance and shades between the great topics death, cable tv, emotions and hamsters.

Groovy
Topic: High Tech Developments 11:53 pm EST, Feb 19, 2007

Groovy is ...

An agile dynamic language for the Java Platform with many features that are inspired by languages like Python, Ruby and Smalltalk, making them available to Java developers using a Java-like syntax.

Developing web applications , writing shell scripts easily, writing concise, meaningful, test cases using Groovy's JUnit integration, or prototyping and producing real industrial strength applications have never been so concise and groovy.

Groovy works cleanly with all existing Java objects and libraries and compiles straight to Java bytecode in either application development or scripting mode.

A recent find. This is the sort of thing I should like.

For 50 years, From Our Own Correspondent (FooC) has been one of BBC Radio's flagship programmes.

Every week correspondents from around the world report on the stories behind the headlines, often bringing a personal perspective to them.

I found FooC via the recent report, Unsung heroes of Afghanistan:

And so, while the country braces itself for someone's spring offensive, the clearing up, the eradication, the rebuilding and empowerment go on.

A lot of it is unsung. It is undoubtedly not enough. And if the fighting and the corruption continue unchecked, it could all still come to nought.

Amid the hubbub over the 'surge' in Iraq, Afghanistan falls off the radar.

Widely covered, but noteworthy, if it gets approved.

Against Well-designed Reputation Systems
Topic: Technology 11:51 pm EST, Feb 19, 2007

This Clay Shirky piece is a couple of weeks old now, but no one else mentioned it, and I just found it.

Intro: I was part of a group of people asked by Beth Noveck to advise the Community Patent review project about the design of a reputation and ranking system, to allow the widest possible input while keeping system gaming to a minimum. This was my reply, edited slightly for posting here.
