'United 93' and the 20th Hijacker
Topic: Arts 12:30 pm EDT, May  6, 2006

For quite awhile after September 11, we were a people united in the war on terror. By now we have let the adrenal pleasures of political fighting over the presidency dissipate the difficult emotions of staying united against a real enemy. The war in Iraq has contributed, but you can't lay it all off on Iraq. The ambiguity of the Moussaoui jury is a portent. See "United 93." It is very difficult. It should be.

Topic: Arts 9:57 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2006

What is this thing?

cin-o-matic is a tool to help people decide what movies to go see or rent.

Why would I want to use it?

By providing a lot of information about a lot of movies in an easily scannable, filterable, and sortable format, users are quickly able to see what movies may interest them and if they're playing in their area or available on dvd/video. If not, users can add movies to their Watch List and be notified when movies become available.

What's the Watch List?

The Watch List is a way for you to keep an eye on movies of interest that aren't yet playing in your area or released on DVD/Video. When they do become available, you can be sent an email notification.

Tina Dico, Winning Talent from Denmark
Topic: Arts 9:56 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2006

Two of Tina Dico's first gigs were talent contests: she won both, and by age 23 had founded her own record label. She has had the No. 1 album in her native Denmark, beating out artists such as Coldplay and U2, and she has done it without the help of a major label.

Dico fronted the band Europe by Transit and also sang for Zero 7 before releasing her first full-length solo disc, In the Red, this past January. She will also sing on Zero 7's next release, Garden.

Her work with Zero 7 might lead some to slot Dico in the electronica category, but she says that's not quite what she's doing.

"I grew up with Bob Dylan and those kinds of things, so I suppose I am more of a slightly more traditional singer-songwriter kind of girl," Dico says.

'Hard Candy' Indeed: A Dark Thriller
Topic: Arts 9:56 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2006

Bob Mondello reviews Hard Candy, a thriller that wraps issues of pedophilia, torture, and vengeance into a slick -- but sick -- little package.

The movie begins with a scenario that may seem familiar to anyone who's read newspapers in the past five years: A girl meets up with a strange adult from an Internet chat room. But Bob Mondello says the film ends up somewhere surprising.

Manohla Dargis found it unwatchable.

Magnet's Dreamy, Surreal Pop
Topic: Arts 9:56 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2006

Magnet is the vehicle of Even Johansen, the Norwegian born singer/songwriter who made a name for himself by working with the U.K. bands Libido and Chocolate Overdose.

Even's work as Magnet is a blend of the traditional and the modern, mixing a folk sound with the more surreal electronica.

The second album from Magnet, called The Tourniquet, was produced by American underground pop veteran Jason Falkner, who also appears on several tracks. The album is a quiet, reflective listen, similar to David Gray in White Ladder. The album has achieved gold record sales in Norway.

Nathalie - Review - Movie - New York Times
Topic: Arts 9:56 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2006

Anne Fontaine's seductive film "Nathalie" is mostly about French star power and sex, so it's somewhat surprising that it is also subtle and intriguing. But then Fanny Ardant, Gerard Depardieu and Emmanuelle Beart make up the romantic triangle.

Being Bad: The Career Move
Topic: Arts 9:56 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2006

IT would probably require a stopwatch to clock the lag time between sin and redemption lately, as media disgrace is transformed into a bargaining chip in a celebrity's career often before a bad boy or girl has stumbled home from the crime scene and showered off the taint of shame.

What seems evident is that public humiliation has lost its barb.
