More than one-third of Iran's Parliament resigned Sunday to protest a sweeping ban on candidates running in the parliamentary election later this month. The defiant move threatened to plunge Iran's political system into chaos. "We cannot continue to be present in a Parliament that is not capable of defending the rights of the people and that is unable to prevent elections in which the people cannot choose their representatives." The brother of Iran's reformist president was among those who resigned. He said, "This is the end of the reform movement." One-Third of Iranian Parliament Quits in Protest |

These are the lyrics of a new song by a NJ based band of rabblerousers calling themselves The Snipers. This song goes to the tune of Bob Marley's Redemption Song and it goes a little something like this... Oh pirates yes they copy, But who are we to bitch? We write songs to make you think Not for us to get rich, But the Man he says you are wrong Backed by RIAA But we have the tools to fight them Just get out there and play Songs that make you think True songs of freedom All we'll ever have We download songs. Emancipate yourselves from market slavery Boycott the servants who rule our lives Have no fear of our corporate entities There's no need for them in these times Let's log on and kill their profits While they treat us all like crooks But it's them been ripping us off. Time to steal back what they took. Songs that make you think True songs of freedom All we'll ever have. We download songs. We Download Songs |

That Was Then: Allen W. Dulles on the Occupation of Germany |

In thinking about the reconstruction of Iraq, many have looked for insight to the American experiences in rebuilding Germany and Japan after World War II. As the saying goes, history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. Picking their way through the rubble, officials early in the Truman administration had little clue about the eventual outcome of their experiments ... They saw little choice but to grope forward as best they could, responding to immediate problems and fast-moving events while trying to keep their eyes steady on a grand long-term vision. Knowing how the story ended, it is difficult for us to escape the tyranny of hindsight and see those earlier cases as they appeared to contemporary observers -- in their full uncertainty, as history in the making rather than data to be mined for present-day polemics. Foreign Affairs is pleased, therefore, to be able to open a window directly onto occupied Germany seven months after V-E Day, taking readers back in media res. CFR reaches into the treasure chest for a true gem. That Was Then: Allen W. Dulles on the Occupation of Germany |

] It is no longer possible to have an original opinion on ] Radiohead. ] ] You've absorbed the deified albums, quarreled over the ] rock critic pontifications, frowned at the guarded, ] combative interviews. Thom Yorke's ugly-stick-beaten mug ] has peered at you from the pages of every magazine known ] to man; his every word and every note has ignited its own ] individual Internet flame war. Mass media has bombarded ] us with Radiohead critique, rendering us unable to ] generate an unfiltered opinion of our own. ] ] When you listen to Radiohead, you're no longer actually ] listening to Radiohead -- you're listening to everyone's ] opinion about Radiohead. It's impossible to separate what ] you hear from what you've read. "In 1946, Walt Disney and Salvador Dalí, in one of cinema's oddest collaborations, teamed up on a short film called Destino. But Disney's studio ran into financial trouble and put the unfinished film on the shelf. Now, 57 years later, a team of Disney animators has finished what Dalí started. The six-minute film, spearheaded by Walt's nephew Roy E. Disney and producer Baker Bloodworth (Dinosaur), premiered at the Annecy Animation Festival in June and is currently touring festivals worldwide. Recent stops include the Telluride, Montreal and Venice festivals, along with the Melbourne International Film Festival, where it won the grand prize for best short film. Scanning cellular phone calls, back when it was inexpensive, used to be exciting mostly because you weren't supposed to be able to do that. Once you'd done it, and done it for a while, it lost its edge. There was the occaisonal gem, like the time we caught a redneck admitting to her boyfriend (much to his chagrin) that she had tried LSD at a party the night before, but these were mostly lost in a sea of boring conversations about dinner and pets... This website is similar, but its about written notes, found floating in the street, and this guy has filtered out all of the grocery lists, flyers, and forms. All thats left is the acid.
