Post Editor Explains Decision to Publish Expletive
Topic: Politics and Law 10:52 am EDT, Jun 26, 2004

The New York Times said Cheney had used "an obscenity" against Patrick Leahy. The Los Angeles Times had Cheney saying "Go ... yourself." CNN said Cheney used "the F-word."

But The Washington Post printed the word yesterday for the first time since publishing the Kenneth Starr report in 1998. And that set the town buzzing.

"Readers need to judge for themselves what the word is because we don't play games at The Washington Post and use dashes."

Cheney Dismisses Critic With Obscenity
Topic: Politics and Law 10:50 am EDT, Jun 26, 2004

On Tuesday, Cheney, serving in his role as president of the Senate, appeared in the chamber for a photo session. A chance meeting with Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (Vt.), the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, became an argument about Cheney's ties to Halliburton Co., an international energy services corporation, and President Bush's judicial nominees. The exchange ended when Cheney offered some crass advice.

"Fuck yourself," said the man who is a heartbeat from the presidency.

This was not the first foray into French by Cheney and his boss. During the 2000 campaign, Bush pointed out a New York Times reporter to Cheney and said, without knowing the microphone was picking it up, "major-league [expletive]." Cheney's response -- "Big Time" -- has become his official presidential nickname.

John Kerry, on Security and Strength for a New World
Topic: Politics and Law 12:54 am EDT, Jun 22, 2004

If we are serious about energy independence, then we can finally be serious about confronting the role of Saudi Arabia in financing and providing ideological support of al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. We cannot continue this Administration's kid-glove approach to the supply and laundering of terrorist money.

To put it simply, we will not do business as usual with Saudi Arabia.

Kerry promises to curtail money laundering and put a lid on loud-mouthed religious leaders. "Look at me, I'm taking a stand!"

Granted, this speech is from May, but still -- these are prepared remarks, and yet there is no mention of the truly serious problems in Saudi Arabia. No concern is expressed about the likelihood that Osama bin Laden may soon be chairing OPEC meetings.

Instead, he offers this gem:

I have proposed a plan for energy independence from Mideast oil in the next ten years.

How does he plan to do that, you ask? Why, 'new technologies', of course! (And new fuels, but no mention of the "d" word or "extraction", although he does speak of a "tap." Is there a beer-powered car in your future?)

Is it realistic to call for independence from Mideast oil by 2014? (Not just Saudi oil, mind you -- Mideast oil!) Funny, but that sounds a lot like Buchananist isolationism to me. What about the global village?

Perhaps John Kerry's New World is on Another Planet.

Using and Abusing 9/11 Fears to Set National Security Policy
Topic: Politics and Law 12:38 am EDT, Jun 22, 2004

"Imagine those 19 hijackers [on Sept. 11] with other weapons and other plans — this time armed by Saddam Hussein."

The "what if" argument still has power. But there are signs a correction is setting in.

To a degree unimaginable before the Iraq war, critics are now forcefully pressing that latter case. Robert Keeley, ambassador to Greece under Reagan, William Crowe, a retired admiral who was a chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Reagan, and Stansfield Turner, another retired admiral and past director of the CIA, were part of a group of 27 high-ranking former officials called Diplomats and Military Commanders for Change who issued a statement last week charging that Bush's policies had left the nation dangerously isolated in the world.

What if, Kerry seems to be arguing, Bush's answers to the toughest "what if" questions have actually made America less secure?

It's too early to say how America will answer that question, but already a safe bet that nothing else will shape the result in November more.

Would More Drilling in America Make a Difference?
Topic: Politics and Law 9:29 am EDT, Jun 21, 2004

Whenever gasoline prices rise high enough in the United States, pressure builds to reduce the country's dependence on imported oil.

Absent a major conservation campaign or a breakthrough in alternative fuels, the country can't sharply reduce its oil dependence.

This article argues that since domestic drilling is ultimately ineffectual, it's probably not worth the trouble.

What's especially troubling is the idea that Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda may soon be in control of the world's #1 oil producer, and the President is saying nothing about it. More troubling, neither is Kerry, it seems.

How can the Democrats expend so much energy defending the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge while not sweating even a drop over serious instability in Saudi Arabia? Have you no sense of the consequences?

Allegiance to My Daughter
Topic: Politics and Law 9:12 am EDT, Jun 21, 2004

Michael Newdow, on the dismissal of his case, in today's NYT.

The case, which I brought, presented the court with an important question.

The court ruled that since I do not have legal custody of my daughter, I do not have the right to pursue the matter in the federal courts.

What's to limit this policy in the future?

After tens of thousands of hours invested over six years, the Supreme Court simply dismissed the case.

God bless America.

The CIA as History's Editor
Topic: Politics and Law 8:44 am EDT, Jun 18, 2004

After weeks of delay, the CIA has decreed that much of the Senate Intelligence Committee's report on intelligence failures is too sensitive for the public to know.

... a blacked-out work of art ...

"Why, in this day and age, with so many diverse sources of information and entertainment, is it really necessary to read this one particular document? A large number of Beautiful People have worked very hard to produce oh so many pretty music videos for you to watch, and you'd rather read a Committee report? And the video games -- don't forget the video games. Especially those cleverly irreverent titles from Rockstar, with so much glorious swearing, and ladies, and guns, and money. Don't you have anything better to do with your time?"

Reagan and America
Topic: Politics and Law 2:50 pm EDT, Jun 12, 2004

It has been a historic few days. We have been reminded of a simpler time.

Mourners include those who are looking for answers to the pressing questions being asked in our country today.

They seem to be asking, What can we do about our country now?

Ronald Reagan embodied the great paradox that is America: wonderful ideals, yet a willingness to pursue policies that go against those ideals. Sadly we see the same gap between rhetoric and policy today.

Margaret Thatcher's attendance at Reagan's funeral is a poignant and important reminder of the special relationship between the United States and Britain and the ability of these Western liberal democracies to confront and defeat the evil of their times.

Roosevelt-Churchill, Reagan-Thatcher, Bush-Blair.

I Agree with Me, by PJ O'Rourke | The Atlantic | July/August 2004

I usually agree with Rush Limbaugh; therefore I usually don't listen to him. I like to argue with the radio.

I wonder, when was the last time a talk show changed a mind?

There's a certain truth in what Ann Coulter says. But it's what's called a "poetic truth." And it's the kind of poetic truth best conveyed late in the evening after six or eight drinks while pounding the bar. I wasn't in a bar. I was in my office. It was the middle of the day. And I was getting a headache.

Does the left have this problem? NPR seems more whiny than hectoring, except at fundraising time.

Arguing, in the sense of attempting to convince others, seems to have gone out of fashion with everyone.

But I believe I know why this shouting is popular. We just don't have time to make ourselves obnoxious. We need professional help.

Lands in Need of Care
Topic: Politics and Law 8:55 am EDT, Jun  1, 2004

It was clear from the moment they took power that Bush and Cheney were determined to greatly accelerate oil and gas drilling on the public lands of the West. All anyone asked for was a balanced approach.

The administration has not produced a balanced policy.
