There are great benefits to connectedness, but we haven't wrapped our minds around the costs. |

The Internet is a loose amalgamation of independent service providers acting in their own self-interest. We examine the implications of this economic reality on peering relationships. Specifically, we consider how the incentives of the providers might determine where they choose to interconnect with each other. We consider a game where two selfish network providers must establish peering points between their respective network graphs, given knowledge of traffic conditions and a nearest-exit routing policy for out-going traffic, as well as costs based on congestion and peering connectivity. We focus on the pairwise stability equilibrium concept and use a stochastic procedure to solve for the stochastically pairwise stable configurations. Stochastically stable networks are selected for their robustness to deviations in strategy and are therefore posited as the more likely networks to emerge in a dynamic setting. We note a paucity of stable peering configurations, with adverse effects on system-wide efficiency. Selfish peering and routing in the Internet |

"Evolution is the unifying theory of all of biology," states Martin Nowak, professor of mathematics and biology at Harvard University. In this lecture, Professor Nowak discusses recent and fascinating advances in our understanding of evolutionary dynamics and its application to genes, quasispecies, games, cooperative behavior, and human language. This program offers over an hour of video content and eighty slides from the presentation. Evolutionary Dynamics |

In the days since the November 2 national election, pollsters and pundits alike have sought to account for "values voters." At this briefing, sponsored by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Brookings Institution, experts will explore these and other issues in light of a new Pew Research Center poll that examines the influence of religion on the 2004 election. Check back late next week for a transcript of this event. How the Faithful Voted: Political Alignments and the Religious Divide in Election 2004 |

"Love is the answer, isn't it? But, sex raises a lot of very interesting questions." About "Kinsey", A.O. Scott said that "the director addresses sexuality with candor and wit, but it is the act of research as much as its object that imparts to "Kinsey" its flush of passion and its rush of romance. I can't think of another movie that has dealt with sex so knowledgeably and, at the same time, made the pursuit of knowledge seem so sexy. Kinsey |

Is assassination ever acceptable? Against whom? Should the government infiltrate religious and political groups? When can coercion be used in interrogation -- and who decides? Since 9/11, there has been a lot of talk about the difficult "balancing act" between civil liberties and national security, but few have considered exactly where and how that balance should be struck. This project finally takes a hard and detailed look. The full text of the report is available in PDF. Preserving Security and Democratic Freedoms in the War on Terrorism |
