Taliban and Allies Tighten Grip in North of Pakistan
Topic: Current Events 12:12 pm EST, Dec 11, 2006

So numerous are the recruits that a tribal leader in southern Afghanistan, who did not want to be named because of the threat of suicide bombers, relayed an account of how one would-be suicide bomber was sent home and told to wait his turn because there were many in line ahead of him.

It's like seniority in a union.

Javed Iqbal, the newly appointed Pakistani secretary of the tribal areas, defended the North Waziristan accord:

"We have tried the coercive tactic, we did not achieve much. So what do you do? Engage."

I am reminded of this quote:

"It has become clear that Internet access in itself is a vulnerability that we cannot mitigate. We have tried incremental steps and they have proven insufficient."
-- Undersecretary of Commerce Mark Foulon

It turns out that looking at the aggregation of billions of search queries people type into Google reveals something about our curiosity, our thirst for news, and perhaps even our desires. Considering all that has occurred in 2005, we thought it would be interesting to study just a few of the significant events, and names that make this a memorable year. (We’ll leave it to the historians to determine which ones are lasting and which ephemeral.) We hope you enjoy this selective view of our collective year.

A lot of really good pictures in this series from someone who stayed in the French Quarter through the disaster.

Iran, Going Nuclear | PBS Frontline/World
Topic: Current Events 9:44 am EDT, May 26, 2005

FRONTLINE/World and BBC reporter Paul Kenyon travels deep into Iran to investigate charges that Iran is secretly developing a nuclear bomb. With exclusive access to a U.N. inspection team, Kenyon visits Iran's most sensitive nuclear sites and reports on the escalating diplomatic tensions surrounding the discovery of the facilities.

Frontline shows what great reporting can be. If only there were more of it on television (and in the media, generally) today. Unfortunately, the commercial networks suffer from different motivations.

Our humvees pass by a body of a man in the center of the street. There is a hole through his left eye socket where a Marine sniper round passed cleanly through.

Insurgent snipers begin firing in front of the Marines. One round pierces the Kevlar helmet a twenty-year-old Mark 19 gunner -- in my vehicle. He is badly wounded. He's put in a canvas stretcher and six Marines run through the streets carrying him to a waiting military ambulance.

The Marines know they are being hunted. Boxed from the east and the west in a treacherous kill zone by an enemy they can feel -- but can't see. Their superior firepower is checked by the insurgents' knowledge of the city -- their cunning in using blind alleyways and the crooks and crannies of buildings to pick off the Marines.
