It's fun from the start, but it gets even more so once the gang wars begin. "Your 'hood is under attack!" Quick -- steal a van, round up a posse, and get over there, pronto! Defend your territory and earn the respect of your fellow gang members. Also, you'll need to buy up some property around town so that you always have a convenient safe house to duck into when the cops get onto you, as well as a garage to stow that fancy sports car you nabbed over on Rodeo. When you need lots of cash, big pimpin' is the way to go. Also, if you want to get a sneak peak at Las Venturas before you've opened up the highway, just jump in the water and swim across. The cops will become relentless, and you will die, but if you're good, you'll be able to get a good look at the Strip, including Excalibur and all the rest. |

The rules were deceptively simple -- rules that people all over the world grasp as young children. Word of mouth generated by the Web site, and by the world championships that the society has sponsored since 2002, have led to a spread of formal and impromptu tournaments in bars, fraternity houses, homes and high schools. Some of my friends scoffed at the idea that the game could involve strategy. I started going up to people at parties and in the office and challenging them to quick matchups. You've got to be bright and quick to win at "Jeopardy." You have to know a lot of things. And although the game is not chess in terms of complexity, or even checkers, there do seem to be some elements of strategy. But while everyone would agree you need smarts, is that the same thing as intelligence? For that matter, what do we really mean by intelligence? In addition to his quick recall, Ken Jennings has also demonstrated lightning speed at solving anagrams. Perhaps this might be called "puzzle intelligence." At least a few MemeStreams users are known to have high levels of "puzzle intelligence." 'Jeopardy' Millionaire Is Smart, but Is He a Genius? |

Worried that cyber cafes are turning into dens of truancy and breeding gang violence, Los Angeles City Council members Wednesday unanimously voted to regulate about 30 businesses where teens and others congregate to use computers. Councilman Dennis Zine, who pushed the proposal, said he acted after a string of shootings at cyber cafes in the San Fernando Valley. "We need to make sure people are safe." Sir, the guns are real, not "cyber." Why don't you start by dealing with the kids-with-guns problem? LA Requires Safety Measures at Cyber Cafes |

Figures compiled by NPD Group, a market research firm, affirm what the marketplace has already established: video games based on Hollywood and book licenses are almost never big hits. Instead, year after year, games based on original characters and universes dominate the sales charts. "Everybody's making games as some kind of way to extend their brands and just make more money, and they don't necessarily understand what makes games good," Mr. Coffey said in a telephone interview. "Most of these licensed games are very boring, very cookie-cutter." Games, movies, music, water, whiskey -- what's the difference? Aiming for Hit Games, Films Come Up Short |
