There is, for instance, a history of aversion to the agricultural population on the part of urban intellectuals and bureaucrats. This "closed city mentality" is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. Urban Chinese often look down on the farmers, whom they consider filthy, uneducated, and lacking in culture.
