A September 2003 workshop examined common US-Russian interests in the greater Middle East and the potential for cooperation. It was easier to identify areas of commonality than areas for cooperation, partly because of a history of mutual distrust. Yet these nations have shown that they can overcome such obstacles. Even modest cooperative activities, as long as they are built across the wide span of the region, may help each nation advance its own goals while improving their relationship with each other.
