Whenever gasoline prices rise high enough in the United States, pressure builds to reduce the country's dependence on imported oil. Absent a major conservation campaign or a breakthrough in alternative fuels, the country can't sharply reduce its oil dependence. This article argues that since domestic drilling is ultimately ineffectual, it's probably not worth the trouble. What's especially troubling is the idea that Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda may soon be in control of the world's #1 oil producer, and the President is saying nothing about it. More troubling, neither is Kerry, it seems.
