CNN.com - Crunch! Giant Chee-to spurs online frenzy - Mar. 7, 2003
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:00 pm EST, Mar  8, 2003

] It's believed to be the largest Chee-to in the world. The
] cheesy glob of fried cornmeal that Navy Petty Officer
] Mike Evans found last week in a bag of the snacks is
] about the size of a small lemon and weighs in at about
] half an ounce.
]
] Evans, 41, a fervent user of online auctions, posted his
] find on eBay. He never expected the flurry of attention
] that followed.
]
] Radio stations from around the country interviewed Evans,
] a Gulf War veteran stationed in Pearl Harbor who
] patiently explained that he bought the bag of Chee-tos
] for his 3-year-old son. Giant Chee-to T-shirts and
] Chee-to puppet auctions sprung up online. And pranksters
] bid up the Chee-to into the millions of dollars -- so
] much that eBay cancelled the sale and a frustrated Evans
] donated the Chee-to to a good cause: a sleepy farming
] community in Iowa.
]
] "I was absolutely astounded that something like a Chee-to
] could become a pop icon," said Evans. "It's
] international. I've even seen it online on a Russian
] site."

Topic: Miscellaneous 9:23 pm EST, Mar  6, 2003

] The issue of student anti-war protests in schools came of
] age during another controversial military action, the
] Vietnam conflict, when a trio of Des Moines, Iowa,
] students took their cause of protesting the war all the
] way to the Supreme Court. In Tinker Vs. Des Moines
] Independent School District (1969), 15-year-old John F.
] Tinker, his younger sister Mary Beth and 16-year-old
] Christopher Eckhardt fought for their right to wear black
] armbands as a silent protest against the war.
]
]
] The school board banned such protests, the students
] refused to remove the armbands and they were told to
] leave school and not return until they complied with the
] school's policies. The district was eventually found
] guilty by the Supreme Court of denying the students'
] First Amendment rights. As a result, students' rights to
] free expression were broadened following the decision,
] though many schools now have "disruptive" clothing rules
] in their codes of conduct.

Nader takes on the SEC, will a campaign be next? | Metafilter

] Nader takes on the SEC, will a campaign be next? Bit by
] bit, Ralph Nader does what he does best, annoying those
] who abuse power. This last year, he has kept with
] advocacy that is in parallel with smart campaign strategy
] and the creation of the SEC watchdog group is an example
] of that. The Greens are still debating him in the forums,
] wondering if he is still their guy. Maybe they should be
] asking if he's OUR guy?

Topic: Miscellaneous 9:54 am EST, Feb 18, 2003

] As "reality" television's newest couple stood in the
] ballroom, stunned into silence by their newfound wealth
] and, presumably, newfound love, fans were force-fed a
] fairy tale ending nobody really wanted.]
] We were promised a trainwreck, but given a pony ride. And
] so last night's two-hour finale of the smash-hit Joe
] Millionaire quickly degenerated into a shameless exercise
] in viewer manipulation.]
] Going into the finale, Evan Wallace Marriott, the dim,
] husky-voiced star of Joe Millionaire, had whittled his
] pool of 20 shallow women down to two contenders: Zora
] Andrich and Sarah Kozer, both 29, both Sagittarius.]
] But early on, given the cloying narration and selective
] editing, the women were deliberately presented as
] opposites. And, quite suddenly, the rush toward a safe
] Cinderella ending was cast with contrived Hollywood
] precision.]
] Zora, a substitute teacher who also works with the
] elderly, was "modest," "humble," "down-to-earth" and
] "small-town." Sarah was "sophisticated" and "seductive"
] %u2014 a woman as comfortable starring in bondage-fetish
] films as she is working for a mortgage broker.

] I think the most disturbing outcome of the documentary
] was Martin Bashir's conduct. He had a massive opportunity
] to show the world what MJ is really about, his day to day
] living, his world, his life, his worries, his
] tribulations, etc. 8 months of access and what did Martin
] show us? Tabloid sensationalism!! Martin really needs to
] look in the mirror as much as MJ and ask himself, did he
] produce a programme worthy of the 8 months spent with MJ?
] I was cringing at the tone, manner, demeanour that Martin
] undertook. Poor by any standards. Please send in Ruby or
] Louis next time!!
] In the end MJ came across a man that had a lot of love
] for kids and he trying to make for a lost childhood,
] given that MJ has alot of money it is only logical that
] many of us would do exactly the same? Really the world
] should question itself - is what MJ is doing really that
] wrong?
] I suppose the only thing that I disliked about MJ was
] that he couldnt bring himself to be honest about the
] plastic surgery.
] Nasser, England
] The interview changed my whole perspective of Michael
] Jackson. The tabloids mould him into what can sell a
] paper, not the gifted man that made one of the biggest
] impacts on music today. He is brave to have let himself
] open to the public like he has. I was astonished to see
] the tabloids this mornin
