"By studying the normal function of BRCA2, we can understand how changes in the protein contribute to the development of cancer"" This is an interesting article. The protein created by the gene BRCA2, when mutated, causes breast cancer. These researchers wanted to figure out why, so they studied unmutated forms of the BRCA2 protein. Pretty neat stuff. In a paper published this week in the journal Nature Cell Biology, UC Berkeley molecular biologists describe a significant difference between the way normal and cancerous cells handle an enzyme called telomerase, which is critical to unrestricted cell growth. The enzyme maintains the telomeres that cap the ends of each chromosome, keeping them long enough so that DNA replication and cell division go without a hitch. "Shuttling genes into hair follicles can alter hair colour, scientists have shown for the first time. The experiments on mice also suggest genetic modification treatments for hair loss will be possible in future. Closer to reality is the prospect of restoring colour to greying hair. But it will be some years before the pioneering work that has given mice shocks of gaudy green hair reaches the salon. "They're punk mice, you could say," jokes Ronald Hoffman, head of the team which developed the mice with green hair at AntiCancer, a Californian biotech company based in San Diego." Now, I know what your thinking. "Why the heck is Marie sending me something whose URL starts with www.microsoft.com? WTF?!?!" And then you see the whole "Microsoft Clippy" title to this meme, and the rage induced by that stupid paperclip in Word comes flooding back (that is, if you have ever used word...which, come on...admit it....you have). But Microsoft has actually canned the paperclip, and had a sense of humor about it.
