] "The first complete sequencing of protein from a fossil ] bone suggests that proteins can survive for millions of ] years - long enough to probe the evolution of many ] extinct species, including the ancestors of modern ] humans. ] For many years, biologists have deduced evolutionary ] relationships from the visible features of living animals ] and fossils. Molecular biology has given them a new tool ] for living animals - comparing DNA sequences. However, ] DNA survives for only a short time after death, so ] paleontologists have been limited to comparing the shapes ] and sizes of the bones of extinct species. ] But analyzing ancient proteins now gives them a new ] option, says Christina Nielsen-Marsh of the University of ] Newcastle, because their amino acid sequences reflect ] genetic codes." ] ""This is a failure at an elementary level," says Jane ] Rissler of the Union of Concerned Scientists in ] Washington, DC. "They couldn't distinguish corn from ] soybeans and remove them from a field. That's like ] failing nursery school." " This was just sloppy. This is going to cause some sort of government action against further pharming...I can see it now, looming in the horizon. I don't know what they are doing pharming in a field normally used for food anyway....Why don't they have their own bloody greenhouses? Then, the argument about cross pollination is obsolete. hrmmmm..... New Scientist - GM crop mishaps unite friends and foes |

"Everyone knows the truly cool kids carry music on Apple iPods. But one enterprising researcher uses it to store the entire human genome. Yes, all 3 billion chemical letters -- A, T, C and G, which represent adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine, the chemicals that spell out human genes -- fit on the iPod."
