Guardian Unlimited | Life | 'We can implant entirely false memories'
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:06 pm EST, Dec 13, 2003

] "We can easily distort memories for the details of an
] event that you did experience," says Loftus. "And we
] can also go so far as to plant entirely false memories
] - we call them rich false memories because they are so
] detailed and so big."

I read the book that was coauthored by Elizabeth Loftus "The Myth of Repressed Memory" in my Science vrs Pseudoscience philosophy class that I took in college. I must say, it was a pretty interesting, as well as disturbing book to read. While reading it, you begin to wonder if your memories are really correct or not - and I recommend the book if you are interested in the subject, although the focus is on people "remembering" sexual abuse.

] from a drug overdose.
]
] The nanoparticles, designed at the Argonne National
] Laboratory, come fitted with receptors designed to
] identify, and then latch onto, target molecules. The
] nanoparticles are injected into the bloodstream, where
] they circulate through the body, picking up their target
] toxins as they go.

'Morning-after pill' over the counter? FDA considers it
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:49 pm EST, Dec  2, 2003

Federal health officials are debating whether it's time to put emergency contraception — the so-called "morning-after pill" — on pharmacy shelves right next to the aspirin, available without a prescription.

This is huge and important for a number of reasons:

1) Emergency Contraception needs to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. And the sooner the better. Being able to run to the store right after you realize the condom broke beats the pants out of calling your doctor's office, getting them to call in a prescription the next morning, etc.

2) Although formally a teenager's medical records are not accessable to their parents, it isn't always possible to call up the family doctor without parents finding out. And getting out to the drug store is much easier to explain than trying to get to Planned Parenthood or another community health clinic.

Monument From Hell - Make room for a Matthew Shepard hate monument in a town square near you. By Emily Bazelon
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:13 pm EST, Nov 11, 2003

] Now the Kansas reverend wants to put up a 6-foot-tall
] monument in Casper's Central Park that you can view here.
] A bronze plaque on the monument would read:
]
]
] Matthew Shepard Entered Hell October 12, 1998, at age
] 21 in Defiance of God's Warning: "Thou shalt not lie with
] mankind as with womankind; it is abomination." Leviticus
] 18:22

Every day I feel more justified in my distaste for stupid christian groups. How can you take a message such as that which Christ ostensibly stood for, and go so far awry?
