"DNATraits, a division of Houston-based genomics and genetics testing company Gene By Gene, Ltd., announced today that it will offer testing for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes in the United States for $995. Prior to today's unanimous Supreme Court ruling, when exorbitant licensing fees kept DNATraits and others from offering BRCA gene tests in the United States, the cost for such tests was around $4,000." Within 24 hours of the decision, we are already able to observe the benefits of this important Supreme Court ruling. Another amazing project by Adafruit. This time, they integrate a circuit containing a color sensor and some LEDs into a scarf. Press the color sensor to any color to make the lights glow in that color. Stunning idea!!! Chameleon Scarf by Adafruit |

"Scientists have discovered water that has been trapped in rock for more than a billion years. The water might contain microbes that evolved independently from the surface world, and it's a finding that gives new hope to the search for life on other planets. The water samples came from holes drilled by gold miners near the small town of Timmins, Ontario, about 350 miles north of Toronto." Water Trapped For 1.5 Billion Years Could Hold Ancient Life |

Disturbing shift in Canada's opinion of fundable science. In a stunning announcement, the National Research Council—the Canadian scientific research and development agency—has now said that they will only perform research that has “social or economic gain”. This is not a joke. I wish it were. John MacDougal, President of the NRC, literally said, “Scientific discovery is not valuable unless it has commercial value”. Gary Goodyear, the Canadian Minister of State for Science and Technology, also stated “There is [sic] only two reasons why we do science and technology. First is to create knowledge ... second is to use that knowledge for social and economic benefit. Unfortunately, all too often the knowledge gained is opportunity lost.” I had to read the article two or three times to make sure I wasn’t missing something, because I was thinking that no one could possibly utter such colossally ignorant statements. But no, I was reading it correctly. These two men—leaders in the Canadian scientific research community—were saying, out loud and clearly, that the only science worth doing is what lines the pocket of business. I definitely agree that siblings can be heavily influential on each others actions. However, that being said, I don't know how this study can separate the fact that sibling pairs have shared life experiences, and thus, the fact that sibling pairs are more likely to undergo a particular behavior could simply be a result of those shared life experiences, and not necessarily a younger sibling emulating an older sibling... "In the aftermath of the bombings in Boston many of us have been thinking a lot about siblings — particularly how older siblings can shape the lives of younger siblings. But until pretty recently, the role siblings play in determining the trajectory of each other's lives hasn't been a particularly hot topic in psychological research. Psychologists, very understandably, have focused on the influences they see as more important — such as parents and peers and genetics. But in the past decade that's been changing a bit. Psychologists interested in how siblings affect one another are taking a new look at all kinds of behavior, particularly anti-social behavior." Sibling Influence |

I am hopeful that Atlanta will rise to this challenge. Many of the pieces are there - community support would seal this. Gilbert F. Amelio, former CEO of Apple Computer and a director of AT&T, is a member of Galectin Therapeutics’ board of directors. Rod Martin is vice chairman of Galectin.
