The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee plans to unveil a new proposal this week to crack down on steroid use in sports, another sign of the growing determination by Congress to impose tougher testing standards and penalties on pro sports. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., told USA TODAY he's co-authoring the bill with Rep. John Conyers (news, bio, voting record), the top Judiciary Committee Democrat from Michigan. It would put the Justice Department in charge of developing "minimum standards" for testing and penalties. Participation in the program would be voluntary, but Sensenbrenner says there will be "incentives" to encourage pro sports leagues to sign up.
How this is going to work is beyond me in any way shape or form. They want to create a penalty system for baseball? How does this serve ANY governmental interest? If it were for criminal penalties, they would not be able to do it because that would create an "anti-protected" class (sports people) violating due process. Civil penalties? On what justification? And who is going to be responsible for this? Justice? That's not going to work. The government will have a "competative sports compliance agency?" Will someone please get rid of this piece of crap? NHL - Back on ice: NHL and the union reach a deal in principle to end lockout |

Canadian phenom Sidney Crosby is the consensus choice to be the No. 1 pick. Where he goes will be determined by a draft lottery that will give each team an opportunity to snag him. He will certainly be part of the NHL's campaign to win back fans that were disenchanted by the lockout.
I hate to break it to you guys, but I don't think anyone gives a damn. One very important note from the lost season. ESPN had the same ratings for its "fill-in" schedule as they did from the NHL. That means things like bowling, and showing "Tilt" three times on Thursday night rated just as well as hockey did the year before. At a substantially lower cost. In a more competative television market. Think the NHL might have a problem getting a TV contract? NHL - Back on ice: NHL and the union reach a deal in principle to end lockout |

] According to a report in Friday's Toronto Star, a Wall ] Street financial services corporation and a sports ] advisory firm are prepared to substantially increase ] their initial offer of $3.5 billion to purchase the 30 ] NHL teams. It would be nice if they took it, then got rid of the jokers doing this "bargaining dis-agreement" and went from there. We might even get some real hockey. Every team would be like a real world fantasy hockey team... The "owners" of each team get a grand in monopoly money, then make deals based on that hard cap. Hell, the hockey "deals" session would be a blast! NHL - Report: United States firms to increase offer for NHL |
