Brain Study: Concussions Caused Benoit's Rage - News Story - WSB Atlanta
Topic: Sports 1:11 pm EDT, Sep  5, 2007

The researcher said Benoit's brain scan looked similar to those of Alzheimer's patients.

He described Benoit's brain as "very abnormal, something you should never see in a 40-year old."

This is still a sad story, but this helps understand how it happened.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick files plea in federal court, admits dogfighting - NFL - Yahoo! Sports
Topic: Sports 2:36 pm EDT, Aug 24, 2007

Michael Vick filed his plea agreement in federal court Friday admitting to conspiracy in a dogfighting ring and helping kill pit bulls. He denied ever betting on the fights, only bankrolling them.

So what can we expect? He'll probably get a year to two years, then be out. In the meantime, it may be a good idea for the NFL to remove him. Guys involved in drugs? They're really only hurting themselves (discounting the drug related crime issue of course). Vick? Torturing and killing dogs? Here's your post release scenario. Vick gets a tryout, some offensive lineman on his team likes dogs, a defensive lineman also on the team does too, they line up across from each other, and oops, he put a move on me, oops, he just sort of blundered into where I was going, oops, I really didn't mean to hurt him that dead.

That assumes he makes it through prison of course. They may be criminals, but they probably like their dogs.

Lawyer: Vick to plead guilty to dogfighting charges - NFL - Yahoo! Sports
Topic: Sports 5:33 pm EDT, Aug 20, 2007

"Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made," Martin said in a statement. "Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter."

Does this mean we get to see a "The Longest Yard" as a new reality series starring Michael Vick?

George W. Bush becomes Managing Partner

Meanwhile, in April of 1989, the Rangers' owner, Eddie Chiles, sold the team to an investment group headed by future President of the United States George W. Bush. Bush would serve as the Rangers' managing partner until he was elected Governor of Texas in 1994. During this time, the Rangers and the City of Arlington decided to construct a new stadium to replace the aging Arlington Stadium. Ground was broken on October 30, 1991 on what would become The Ballpark in Arlington (now named Rangers Ballpark in Arlington).

So there's this great story about how W took control of the Texas Rangers and turned a crappy team around. Let's take a look at that. W runs the team from 89 to the end of the strike shortened season in 94. Starting in 1993, baseball expanded to its current format of three divisions in each league, with the Rangers in the AL West. To put this another way, Bush's teams for the first three years finished no better than third, but hey, we'll cut him some slack, he's taking over from the previous guys, and when the split happens, he finishes second (of four teams) and was #1 in the division! Oh wait, he was #1 with a LOSING RECORD! Well that doesn't look all that good all of a sudden.

So let's take a look at the roster. Palmiero, he was pretty good right? Trade made by the prior owners. Kevin Brown? Already there. Juan Gonzalez? Already there. Pudge Rodriguez? Already there. Julio Franco? Already there. Sierra? Same. Nolan? Yep, he was there too. Hey Jamie Moyer! He was there! Yep, and the team gave him an outright release.

Now, W did bring in Will Clark, but wait, he also brought in Jose Canseco.

Forget it. He built a loser just like every other thing he put his hands on.

wcbstv.com - Police: NFL Star Terrell Owens Attempts Suicide
Topic: Sports 1:16 pm EDT, Sep 27, 2006

Flamboyant Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens tried to kill himself by overdosing on pain medication, police said, even putting two more pills into his mouth after a friend intervened.

Whoops. This isn't a good sign...

Update: TO says it was a drug interaction making him unresponsive, not a suicide attempt. So, he's kinda stupid and took more Vicodins than he should have. I guess stupid is better than depressed (in some ways) but stupid is as stupid does.

Clemens Gives Up Homer to Son Then Plays Chin Music
Topic: Sports 8:06 pm EST, Feb 27, 2006

Roger Clemens' son took the Rocket deep on his first real pitch of spring training, crushing a trademark fastball over the left-field fence.

"That was probably one of the harder fastballs I cut loose," Clemens said after throwing to son Koby and other Houston Astros minor leaguers Monday at Kissimme, Fla. "He got my attention."

Then the Rocket got Koby's. The next time his oldest son came to the plate, Roger buzzed him high and tight with another fastball.

No breaks!

Team officials say they are looking at fines, suspensions and other punishments. They can even be sent to jail for their heinous acts. So, what did this band of criminals do? Consensual sex with other adults! How dare they?!

Moral of the story? Don't charter.
