Reuters AlertNet - Nuremberg prosecutor says Guantanamo trials unfair
Topic: Politics and Law 1:39 pm EDT, Jun 12, 2007

"I think Robert Jackson, who's the architect of Nuremberg, would turn over in his grave if he knew what was going on at Guantanamo," Nuremberg prosecutor Henry King Jr. told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"It violates the Nuremberg principles, what they're doing, as well as the spirit of the Geneva Conventions of 1949."

Pretty much sums it up I think.

Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, disclosed in an interview that the FBI asked him to preserve records as part of a widening investigation into Alaskan political corruption that has touched his son and ensnared one of his closest political confidants and financial backers.

Uh oh. Think the pipes of the internets might have a sewer line about to dump on Ted?

House Approves Speedy Jefferson Probe - The Huffington Post

"I am innocent of these allegations and confident that members of the Ethics Committee will arrive at the same conclusion through investigation."

Dude, they grabbed $90,000 of a $100,000 bribe in marked bills out of your freezer. Who the hell are you trying to kid? To play with Johnnie Cochran, "If the money ain't spent, you're innocent?"

As a New Yorker, "I have seen first hand the terrible damage that can be inflicted on our country by a small band of terrorists," Clinton said.

Still, she said, "I believe we are safer than we were."

Which is why I don't think Hillary should be president.

Jury Indicts Jefferson in Bribery Probe - The Huffington Post
Topic: Politics and Law 2:41 pm EDT, Jun  4, 2007

Almost two years ago, in August 2005, investigators raided Jefferson's home in Louisiana and found $90,000 in cash stuffed into a box in his freezer.

Finally. Two years after they grab the money they get around to the charges. And us lefties don't like our guys taking money under the table any more than we like it when the other side does it. Good thing they raided his house before Katrina though or they might not have anything...

At the insistence of the Bush administration, Graves resigned on March 10, 2006. Graves has said publicly that he believes his dismissal was the result of clashes he had with his superiors for not aggressively pursuing voting-fraud cases.

Still more on the Attorney mess. They've moved into stealing elections and are getting caught doing so. I realize this has happened before, Tammany Hall and the Chicago slogan of "vote early, vote often" come to mind, but in all of those cases, the people who did so are reviled if not despised. It's about as un-American as it gets.

Minnesota case fits pattern in U.S. attorneys flap - Los Angeles Times
Topic: Politics and Law 7:07 pm EDT, May 31, 2007

A hint at why Heffelfinger's name was on termination lists that Justice Department officials and Bush political strategists put together emerged when Monica M. Goodling, the department's former White House liaison, testified last week before the House Judiciary Committee about the firings.

Goodling said she had heard Heffelfinger criticized for "spending an excessive amount of time" on Native American issues.

In other words, he was on the firing list because he wasn't trying to suppress voting. Jim Crow is back, but this time he's not carrying signs that say "Whites only," the work is happening behind the scenes.

"We are today writing to express our extreme disappointment in the White House's rebuff of efforts by the Judiciary Committee to obtain voluntary cooperation with our investigation concerning the firing of at least nine U.S. Attorneys in 2006 and related matters," they wrote. "We write to make one last appeal for such voluntary cooperation."

There is a point sometimes to the idea that people need unfettered access to opinions/information without someone going over their shoulder. That is not what we have here and it is not "politics as usual," as the White House is trying to claim. What has been going on at DoJ has the appearance of violating multiple federal statutes (the email mess, political standards in hiring career employees, removal of sitting political appointees amounting to obstruction of justice) for the purpose of violating still more federal statutes (Voting Rights Act of 1965 for starters).

What we are in the middle of watching is the systematic dismantling of the Constitution, transforming the country into a banana republic, and that's being charitable. Bush as Mussolini? That description may be accurate.

The BRAD BLOG : Palast Exclusive: AN ARMY OF ROVE-BOTS
Topic: Politics and Law 6:09 pm EDT, May 18, 2007

Most notable were the "caging" lists naming thousands of voters who lost their vote to GOP challenges, a large proportion of them soldiers sent overseas. Voting rights attorney, law professor Robert F., Kennedy Jr., reviewed the evidence we obtained and concluded, "They ought to be in jail for doing this" --- Griffin and his boss Rove both --- for violating the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

But who would bust them, Bobby? Albert Gonzales?

Well, this may provide some context for the Attorney mess, and may explain why Rove thought he had "the numbers." He was trying to cook the books.

Christian right leader writes off Giuliani - CNN.com
Topic: Politics and Law 2:37 pm EDT, May 18, 2007

In a piece published on the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily, Dobson wrote that Giuliani's support for abortion rights and civil unions for homosexuals, as well as the former mayor's two divorces, were a deal-breaker for him.

Here are the sorts of "values conservatives" that aren't going to be joining the Democrats anytime soon. Hell, they're even going to the right of the GOP.
