"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ" --Gandhi

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -Theodore Roosevelt

"A little revolution, now and then, is a good thing." -Thomas Jefferson-

"In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in 12 years, we'll be voting for plants." -Lewis Black-

"When you're born in the world you're given a ticket to the freakshow; when you're born in America you're given a front-row seat. And some of us in the front row have notebooks and pencils." -George Carlin

"I am innocent of these allegations and confident that members of the Ethics Committee will arrive at the same conclusion through investigation."

Dude, they grabbed $90,000 of a $100,000 bribe in marked bills out of your freezer. Who the hell are you trying to kid? To play with Johnnie Cochran, "If the money ain't spent, you're innocent?"

As a New Yorker, "I have seen first hand the terrible damage that can be inflicted on our country by a small band of terrorists," Clinton said.

Still, she said, "I believe we are safer than we were."

Which is why I don't think Hillary should be president.

Jury Indicts Jefferson in Bribery Probe - The Huffington Post

Almost two years ago, in August 2005, investigators raided Jefferson's home in Louisiana and found $90,000 in cash stuffed into a box in his freezer.

Finally. Two years after they grab the money they get around to the charges. And us lefties don't like our guys taking money under the table any more than we like it when the other side does it. Good thing they raided his house before Katrina though or they might not have anything...

Judge Dismisses Charges Against Detainee - The Huffington Post
Topic: War on Terrorism 2:26 pm EDT, Jun  4, 2007

A prosecuting attorney said he would appeal the dismissal of the case.

Under the new war-crimes trial system, the prosecution has 72 hours to appeal, but the court designated to hear the appeal _ known as the court of military commissions review _ doesn't even exist, Sullivan noted.

Even as the U.S. military hoped to rev up its prosecutions of Guantanamo detainees _ with the Pentagon saying it expects to eventually charge about 80 of the 380 prisoners held at this isolated base _ questions lingered about the legitimacy of the process.

Charge 80 of the 380? Wait, weren't these supposed to be "the worst of the worst?" If you're only charging about one in five of them, that sounds like quality control has some serious issues...

At the insistence of the Bush administration, Graves resigned on March 10, 2006. Graves has said publicly that he believes his dismissal was the result of clashes he had with his superiors for not aggressively pursuing voting-fraud cases.

Still more on the Attorney mess. They've moved into stealing elections and are getting caught doing so. I realize this has happened before, Tammany Hall and the Chicago slogan of "vote early, vote often" come to mind, but in all of those cases, the people who did so are reviled if not despised. It's about as un-American as it gets.

Informant Plays Key Role in JFK Plot - The Huffington Post
Topic: War on Terrorism 1:26 pm EDT, Jun  4, 2007

Defreitas, 63, who immigrated to the U.S. more than 30 years ago from Guyana, was in custody Sunday pending a bail hearing, was arrested two days earlier in Brooklyn.

Ibrahim and another suspect, Abdul Kadir, were in custody in Trinidad awaiting extradition hearings. Officials identified Kadir as a former mayor of a Guyanese town and a member of the country's Parliament.

Authorities in Trinidad were still seeking a fourth suspect, Abdel Nur.

Authorities said the JFK case and last month's arrest of six men suspected of plotting to attack soldiers at Fort Dix, N.J., illustrated the need for inside information.

Is this what they mean by fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here? Looks like that plan is going about as well as the fighting them there part of this.

Minnesota case fits pattern in U.S. attorneys flap - Los Angeles Times

A hint at why Heffelfinger's name was on termination lists that Justice Department officials and Bush political strategists put together emerged when Monica M. Goodling, the department's former White House liaison, testified last week before the House Judiciary Committee about the firings.

Goodling said she had heard Heffelfinger criticized for "spending an excessive amount of time" on Native American issues.

In other words, he was on the firing list because he wasn't trying to suppress voting. Jim Crow is back, but this time he's not carrying signs that say "Whites only," the work is happening behind the scenes.

"I have no doubt that a trend of global warming exists," Griffin told Inskeep. "I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with."

"To assume that it is a problem is to assume that the state of Earth's climate today is the optimal climate, the best climate that we could have or ever have had and that we need to take steps to make sure that it doesn't change," Griffin said. "I guess I would ask which human beings — where and when — are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now is the best climate for all other human beings. I think that's a rather arrogant position for people to take."

As George Carlin puts it, "Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are fucked."

The Problem With the WMDs
Topic: War on Terrorism 11:13 pm EDT, May 30, 2007

This is a question that's been percolating in my mind for quite some time now, and I'd like to hear what others think.

I think that W and company knew there were zero WMDs in Iraq from the get go. The reasoning goes as follows. If Iraq has WMDs, then the force being sent up the road four years ago, which is short on a lot of things, one of which we have found out is MOPP gear, the stuff that would protect the guys from chemical or biologic attack. So either they know they don't have the WMD and therefore the invasion is a slam dunk, or they're sure they have WMDs, and the force being sent up the road is on their way to a slaughter not seen since WWI.

Which is it? Did they think Iraq didn't have them and therefore the attack would work, or did they think Iraq had them and willingly sent 100,000+ soldiers off to get killed?

Bush envisions U.S. presence in Iraq like S.Korea - Yahoo! News
Topic: Current Events 11:06 pm EDT, May 30, 2007

President George W. Bush would like to see a lengthy U.S. troop presence in Iraq like the one in South Korea to provide stability but not in a frontline combat role, the White House said on Wednesday.

Someone, specifically W, has absolutely no idea what the real world looks like. And that bit about not planning to stay indefinitely? I don't think this statement and that one are reconcilable. It's been a lie from day one.
